Recently I have been reading about LDAP and understand that openLDAP is free with lot of good features. However it seems like we need to be able to compile the code to use it. Can anybody point me to resources where I can have binary impln. of FREE LDAP servers.
Thanks,
Bhushan

Hi,
What platform are you looking for a binary on?
OpenLDAP comes with most recent Linux distributions. Sun One Directory Server is free to use up to 250,000 users on Solaris 9. Novell and IBM both have binary servers available on some platforms (though IBM's server may no longer be free and Novell has a maximum number of entries before you have to license, I believe). If you've already licensed BEA WebLogic, it includes the 100% Java LDAP server that my company develops.

An older binary of OpenLDAP for Windows 2000, which should be usable for testing, but probably not for production use. can be found at http://www.fivesight.com/downloads/openldap.asp. I don't see any other sources of Windows binary distributions with the newer releases, which feature lots of bug fixes/enhancements.
IBM Directory is a great product, but has a lot of requirements to get running and is a HUGE download. If you're just looking to experiment I believe Novell eDirectory is a great LDAP directory and it is (I'm almost positive) free for developers. See http://developer.novell.com/edirectory/.

I heard someone was creating a java implementation of LDAP, but I have no idea what it is called, and I heard it was version 0.1 or something.
I'll go have a look.

It looks like the last one mentioned above has become Eve at Apache
