I passed the SCJP exam today - 91% with 15 days of preparation. (I had previous knowledge of java and very good at OO ).
Thanks to all java ranchers here. A few tips:
Get the Basics straight.
I feel RHE is enough. but u should know every word in RHE.
Mock exams help a lot. Trying harder ones boosts confidence.
Marcus Green sample tests, Jxam, Java ranch rules round up, Java prepare, Khalid applet(tough), Majji's sample tests, Bill Brodgen, Applied reasoning are the tests I took.
Maha's site has helped a lot.(especially Discussions)
I referred Velmurugan's notes, Rossanne Zhang's site, Java prepare and java ranch.
Review each question after the test. I could correct 5.
Rest is hard work.

Thanks to Ajith, Aruna tibriwal for their suggestions.

Hi Viral,
RHE is the java certification book :
1.The complete guide to Java Certification by Robert, Heller and Ernest.
2: The Sample tests are listed in Maha Anna's site
www.javaranch.com/maha
If u r new and planning to take SCJP, I would ask u to visit the above site and also www.javaprepare.com to get an idea about the exam.

Hi,
Thank you. Ishaan.
I completed reading the 13 chapters in roughly seven -eight days.
Covering 2 chapters a day. Since I knew OO concepts and Java previously, It was okay. Awt and IO took a day or two each.
I did 1 or 2 exams daily, reconfirming the concepts wherever I went wrong. I didnot score that well in all mock exams, except javaranch. (Ofcourse, i did that even before I thought about taking scjp)
Forenoon - chapter study.
Afternoon - test.
Approx. 6 hrs daily.
Marcus green test - (I got 5, 8, 12) wrong in each of the tests.
Applied reasoning -(55/77)
Jxam - 70, 60, 85;
Bill Brodgen- 12/18
Rest around the same. The (2)days before I scored really well around 90's. Taking the same tests.
Which gave me confidence that I will atleast pass. But praise God, The score was wonderful.

Sorry could not catch up: was busy!!!
Thanks all of you.
Hi kaffo lekan,
Regarding the exam, it might be tough for beginners who are new to Information Technology. I feel that candidates who are taking the exam must have good understanding of Object Oriented concepts and Java. There are code based and non-code based questions in the test.
I would recommend taking the mock exams available free on the internet to see what your position is regarding the test.
A list of mock exams are available on the site
www.javaranch.com/mock.jsp
Bye and good luck
