Long walk to the printer --- 98%

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Two hours ago I was in one of the testing centers where you don't get to see the result on your monitor, you have to walk out to the front desk to get your printout to see the result.
I was totally shocked to see the result compared to my Mock Test results. I missed one question on Threads.
My study/mock test pattern:
Read RHE answering all the questions in the chapters.
RHE Test 88%.
Marcus Green #3 ~60% Yikes! (I started with exam 3 since it has the least code in the questions and I wanted to save the others for later)
Jxam 76%
(around this time I remember visiting JavaRanch a lot and when reading the tips & tricks I had a hard time getting the point of them so figured I should buckle down for some more studying)
Read Mughal & Rasmussen (I spent a lot of time trying out the code and code concepts; the compiler is your fried) answering all the questions in the chapters.
While reading Mughal I visited JavaRanch a lot. Tried to stay in the cert study threads but also spent a lot of time reading cert results; thanks everyone for sharing their experiences, especially after the new test came out in October.
JQPlus Test 1 73%
JQPlus Test 2 78%
JQPlus Test 3 86%
Marcus Green #1 83%
JQPlus Random Test 83%
JQPlus All the Thread Questions (some I'd gotten before)
Marcus Green #2 80%
Mughal sample test in book 80%
Quick Read of Bill Brogden's Exam Cram.
Exam Cram (Chapter Qs, not the exam in the back) 84%
Time for the real thing as I was getting burned out with studying.
I agree with others before me that the exam is straight forward.
The only things I felt (before the exam) I needed to study beyond what I got out of reading RHE and Mughal (including compiling anything I had a question about or hadn't used before) were GridBagLayout and IO.
My GridbagLayout questions (1 or 2) were conceptual.
For IO I spent extra time studying the inheritance hierarchy, constructors, and methods. My IO questions were on File methods and Constructor chaining.
Thanks to everyone at JavaRanch, Marcus Green, authors of the books I mentioned!
Good luck to everyone on their way to take the exam!

Excellent! Thanks for coming back and sharing your experience. Your topic reminds me of the movie, "The Green Mile." The knot in your stomache must have been pretty tight during that walk.
Enjoy your success.

Ps. Please let us know if you've done any JAVA programming at work. How much time in total did you spend studying for the exam.

Peter,
I've been on a java project at work for about a year. Actual programming has been intermittent (you know, gotta get requirements, do some design...also some technical lead tasks aka non-programming). Over the past year I've spend a lot of my personal time learning java and J2EE. Before that I spent 2 years doing OOP with C++ -like language (Forte 4GL which is not Forte for java).
I started studying in October and I'll be honest that at that point my fundamentals were pretty weak. I had learned java in a fundamental way (classroom at a university with pre-requisites of C and OO fundamentals), but then didn't use it for about 2 years.
So, I studied for 4 months with a couple of weeks off over the holiday. About two weeks to go through RHE, 4 - 6 weeks to go through Mughal. Two or three days cruising through exam cram.
Throw in a couple of weeks (here & there) taking mocks and a couple of weeks (here & there) cruising JavaRanch and Marcus Green's site. Oh ya, I went through some of MG's tutorial.

Congratulations Carol!
You know, it reminds me of my test where I too missed just 1 question and scored 98%. The question I missed had a fill-in answer and I shouldn't have put a semi-colon in there!
Anyways, I don't regret 98% because I know how hard it is to reach there!
Best wishes,

Congrats Carol
thanx for the detailed description of your study -

Sorry, I really didn't make any useful notes.
There are plenty of references to useful notes in this forum, though.
I was lazy. For my last minute reviewing I:
-did a quick read Bill Brogden's Exam Cram
-reviewed IO Inheritance Hierarchy
-looked at IO Constructors (need to recognize correct/incorrect constructor use and need to know the unique ones.)
-reviewed Events, Listeners, Adapters

It may have been a long walk to the printer (been there!) but I bet you walked on air leaving the test center.
Congratulations on a great score.

Hey Carol,
Congrats! 98% is quite an achievement! I too missed 1 question, that too on threads, and scored 98%. But in my case I got my results instantly on the monitor

hi ajit and carol
some of us still have questions regarding fill-in the blank type questions
so please tell us
whether
-do they give enough instructions on how to give the answer!!??
-should we put semicolons
-should we put answer in "quotes"
-should we put () in method names
-should we put parameters in method names!!??
please clarify
anything else regarding the same line of questions
thanks in advance

Kalpesh,
I got just one fill-in-the-blank type question.
I thought the instructions were pretty clear (but do not recall the specific instructions).
In the blank I was to put the value of a String reference after a bunch of manipulations to the reference.
Hope that helps.

I was asked to write a piece of code for method invocation, I shouldn't have added the semi-colon.
This was in May 2000 and I guess questions aren't so tricky in the new version of the exam.
