Hi,
I gave exam yesterday and cleared it with 86%. Got 51 out of 59 correct. Thanks to God.
In the beginning i lost 7 minutes as my time had started about which i did not know and i was busy with the fomalities which i had to tick before the exam.
Exam was not too difficult. I was not fully prepared for the exam but could not do anything as i had already delayed it a lot and had to appear for it on 9th May. I studied seriously only during the last 5 days. But everything went well.
For others who are appearing for the exam :
The language of the paper is very tricky. Always give the paper with relaxed mind. Don't get confused or tense if u see few tough questions in succession.
Be sure that u read each and every word of the code, especially the modifiers of the classes and methods . I had lot of question related to them.
In many question there was an option that the code will not compile and u were to tell the line at which the code will give error ( if it gives).
Most of the questions were code based. I had around 10-15 questions which had more than 20 lines of code. For most of the other questions, the code is of 10-15 lines.I agian stress that u must take care of the access modifiers.
I had around 7 questions on thread and i did not find them difficult as i was confident in threads.
In streams i had around 5 questions. Most of them required that u should know the constructors of the stream classes throughly. This topic i did basically only from Khalid Mughal. The classes defined in KAM are i think enough.
Even for java.util, i find KAM is sufficient.
Be sure that u do overriding and overloading well. I had lot of questions on these.
Make sure that u understand the concept about what u are doing. KAM is good for this.
I bought JQ+ but did not complete it. I did its questions only topic wise. Moreover I did not take any mock exam, that was my mistake. Actually i thought that i would take the complete mock exam only when i was completely prepared but that time never came. But few days before the exam i decided not to take any exam thinking that if i dont get good marks, it would shake my confidence. I strongly suggest that u should take some mock exams before u appear for the test. I think JQ+ is very good for making concepts. If u go for it then u must read the explanations for the questions u do from there even if do them correctly. JQ+ helped me a lot.
i feel KAM is the best book for JCP. The exam is very well in the sphere of KAM. RH is easy as compared to KAM but definitely KAM is better.
javaranch also helped me a lot. whenever i used to feel demoralized, i use to visit the site and read the views of those who cleared the exam. That really used to boost my confidence. Whenever i had time and i am on net, i used to visit the site and read others problems and comments.
That really helped me a lot.
If possible, u should try make a group in which u can discuss the toppics which u have done. I am sure that really helps to clear ur concepts but unfortunately i never had anybody with whom i could discuss about the exam and its toppics. Do atleast read the problems which people places in javaranch and if possible try to participate in that.
The paper was Ok but after the exam i was expecting that around 54 questions would be correct. you have lot of time for the questions in the exam.

But the only thing a person should take care of is that he should not get confused and tense.
All the best for all those who are appearing for the exam.
If require any other information or help, u can contact me or write in the post. I will reply back.
Wishing all of u luk
Mandeep

Hi Mandeep,
Thanks for sharing your experience, and congratulations on that good score. After reading your post, I feel I am in the same position as you were in. I have also been postponing the exam for a long time. I now have to give it on the 14th of May. I am very afraid. I have done mock exams ( all the 3 by Marcus Green and some more). I pass in those. But the KAM mock was very tough....I did not clear that . In the begining (when I started studying Java), I wanted to score high marks. NOW, I want to pass!!! I just hope I make it.

Hi Rebecca,
If you search through the posts you'll find that nearly everyone has trouble getting a high score on the KAM exam; don't let it shake your confidence. If you know and understand the fundamentals you'll be fine.
All the best for the 14th.

Thank you Jane. Your post really boosts my morale. But I am still nervous, I suppose everyone is 2 days before the exam. Thanks anyway

Hi Rajashree and Rebecca,
Thanks everybody for ur wishes.
As far as Topics in the exam are concerned, I just went through Vector class from Patrick Naughton. It won't take much
( i think not more than 15-20) minutes to go through that. I did not do Stack and other classes but read 2-3 lines about Stack class so that i just have an idea. And regarding Enumerator and Iterator, i think it is better if u go through their methods. I did that actually from Java documentation.
Iterator i did because there is lot of reference about them in java.util. For collections i first started with Sun tutorial which i think is very good. Actually that took out the fear which i had for collections. Although i did first 3-4 topics from it( i think before Map) but that really helped and that is because i could do collections easily from KAM.
Actually Applet and AWT i could not revise well before the exam as i did not have time. It were the concepts which helped me in the exam as i had done these topics many times ( although not from the examination point of view ) . There were i think 2 questions from Applet but they basically the code based. They just required the basic understanding of Applets.
I AGAIN STRESS THAT U SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL ABOUT ACCESS MODIFIERS OF THE CLASSES AND METHODS.
Rebecca, i can understand your state of mind, but i would suggest u not to go for any test at this point of time. Even i thought of doing the test of KAM 1 day before the exam but did not actually gave the test. I just read a question and then tried to solve it and then checked the answer for that question. then proceeded with the next question. This way even i did some questions wrong i did not feel nervous. Believe me, the test is not that difficult.
But YOU HAVE TO BE VERY CAREFUL WHILE READING THE QUESTIONS. READ EVERY PART OF THE QUESTIONS .
REMEMBER THE CONSTRUCTORS OF STREAM CLASSES. IT WERE BASICALLY THE CONSTRUCTORS ON WHICH THE QUESTIONS WERE BASED.
Just be sure that whatever u have don eu are thororugh in that. Believe in Yourself.Luck also matters a lot in such exams. You must have worked hard and so leave everything to god.Everything will be fine.
All the best for your exam. Wishing u great success.
Do inform me about your result.
Mandeep
