what does certification get you

How does being certified compare to not being certified....
as far as getting a job and the pay rate,, even going in as an
entry level employee, your not an expert at programming yet....

It depends on your company and your goals, methinks.
Some companies (mine included) do give a promotion if you get certified. The only way to move up from 'junior programmer' in our firm is to become SCPJ2 certified. (Then again, all we do is Java programming.)
I look at it from a different point of view - it's like when you walk into a doctor's or attorney's office. It's a sign that you know what you're doing, and that alone is worthwhile enough. It also just looks good on your resume as a sign that you do work to improve your skills and aren't adverse to studying.
Certifications are like degress - they're only worth what you can convince someone else they're worth.

Still waiting for the first two... and have had to pay for the third myself...
