Hello all,
Happy story - I passed with 76%. I'm pretty pleased, alrighty, as I was aiming for 61%.
Background...
I started looking at java about a year ago. I found Savitch's "Intro to computer science and programming" very useful - wordy but certainly a good beginner level text.
After a month or so, I put java cert. to one side while working on a programming certificate course(algorithm design, procedural and object oriented programming, with java electives). The course was good as it covered lots of basics, and the java electives included some coverage of jdbc and rmi.
By the time I finished the course and returned to cert. study, the whole thing seemed much more straightforward. After a couple of weeks of java book learnin' (exam cram and RHE), cows, cows and more cows and mock exams, I'm looking forward to starting in on the developer assignment. It sounds pretty interesting.
Anyway, my message is intended to be encouragement to anyone who can't bear the thought of yet another mock exam and wouldn't mind if they never heard of bit shifting ever ever ever ever again.
This will pass, and it's most likely that you'll get to the other end.

Hey Good score
Could u share your experience of giving the SCJP exam? How did u find the exam?
Was it on the easier side than what you thought?

Hi Sonir,
I hoped I'd not get many on bit shifting as I'd done very little in that area. Happily, there was only one question and it was straightforward.
There were some interesting questions testing knowledge of constructor behaviour in super and subclasses. Lots of code analysis. Only a couple on AWT. There was a bit of casting and plenty of threads. The bits on IO focussed on knowing the constructors for various streams and readers. Knowing about reference passing, parameters and the immutability of Strings featured in several questions.
I couldn't say that any of the single or multiple choice questions were ambiguous.
I think the exam was more difficult than I'd expected, but that's probably related to the amount of preparation. (ie I'd say the more you do, the easier it would be).
As for my experience of taking the test - I knew I'd get through it, so that was a good start. I was pretty relaxed about it. The worst thing that could have happened would have been that I'd have done my dough and would have to face the tedium of more cramming. :-)
The most trying aspect of the day was getting the voucher in the morning and hoping like blazes that I'd be able to get into a testing centre that arvo - happily it came together.
I do wish that Sun would put their voucher puchasing process online (or at least enable prometric to sell their vouchers). I think it would streamline things no end.
