hi guys,
I have been reading all your posts for 1 week and I tell u I regret for not knowing this site earlier.....okay I am appearing for SCJP in another 4 weeks so I want to know the ratio of people who appear for SCJP to that of the people who pass SCJP .....
I know it is a silly enough question ...but it may help me boost my morale ( especially after getting 50% yesterday on a JQ+ test)
I hope I don't take much of your time for this...
thanks,
Mounika

I have been doing some "research" lately and I have posted some stats in the following post:
http://www.javaranch.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=24&t=014690
They are not official. I have just collected people's results in the SCJP Results forum from October 2000 to January 2002...

mounika,
I don't want to scare you or make you feel bad, but I have to be honest that if you are scoring 50% on a mock test only 4 weeks before you take the real test, chances are that you are not going to be ready and will not pass.
Is there any way you can delay the test for another month or so?
Barring that, how much time can you devote each day to studying and writing sample code?

I would guess that I would have scored about 10% on a JQ+ test 4 weeks ago. Because I picked up my first Java book a month ago. And I became a SCJP2 this week with a 91%...you've got plenty of time. Focus on the JQ+ tests...you'll get there.
Good luck!

I scored 54% on my first JQ+ Test1 2 1/2 weeks ago and I passed on Friday! All mock exam does is to focus your weakness (it doesn't have to be JQ+). keep on doing them!! Just Do It!

This may be true, but you two are exceptions. This is not the norm around here.

One thing people are forgetting when asking for advice is that everybody is different. I'm sure someone will come one day and say "hey folks, check it out, I started studying for SCJP one week ago and before that I had never seen a line of Java code. I took the exam today and got 75%." Well, for me, the value of a certification obtained that way is close to 0. I wouldn't even consider hiring such a guy.
My point is that you have to take your time and make one step after another.
To questions like this one, people may answer differently depending on their Java level. Some people learn fast, other slowly. There is no such thing as THE absolute advice. YOU have to feel confident because YOU are taking the exam and YOU are going to be sitting alone in a 40 feet sq cubicle during 2 hours and YOU are going to be on your own.
I hate it when people like the one I made up above are talking like that. They maybe make you feel comfortable at first by saying that "one month is more than enough and that you are gonna make it", but this is just a plain lie, because it was their case but most likely not yours.
People, when you are giving some piece of advice, spend some time thinking about what you are going to say, because what you say may be more misleading than helpful sometimes.

Valentin and Rob is right.
I failed to tell you that before I took the real exam I did got 80% a few times on JQ+. And did well on the Java Ranch's Quiz and other mock exams... so if you don't feel "comfortable" plz delay your exam. I apologize if I have mislead you in anyway.

hi mounika,
valentin is very right. don't give the exam for just getting the certificate. a certificate for the heck of it is of no use. you should be proud to be sun certified. the ammount of time you spent on mastering the intricacies of the language should be the satisfaction. people will say many things, but there is no greater satisfaction than knowing the language well and being sun certified...
