I took my Java 1.4 Programmer exam last week and scored 90%.
For what it's worth, this is how I studied:
I first started studying about a year ago using "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification" by Mughal and Rasmussen. But I found it too heavy-going and too detailed and so I gave up completely. I'm not saying it's a bad book, just that it wasn't right for me.
Then a couple of months ago I bought a copy of "Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide" by Heller and Roberts and found this much more readable - I'd highly recommend this one. I read that through once, then bought "Java 2 Exam Cram" by Brogden and read that through completely (obviously missing out the non-1.4 sections). I then read the Heller and Roberts book once more. At this point, I used the Mughal and Rasmussen book to expand my knowledge on my weak areas or areas I didn't feel were covered as well in the other books. The detail that this book went into then proved very worthwhile - so I'd suggest using this book towards the end of your studying.
Apart from the books, I did the usual freebie mock exams available on the web. I also bought the JWhiz mock exams which, although contained loads of typos and some of the explanations could have been better, I found to be very useful. I was consistently scoring mid-eighties on these tests in the last week of my studying.
And of course, there's nothing better than writing your own code to make a topic really sink in.
Those were my experiences. Good luck to anyone else taking the exam!
Jon.
