I am currently
new to java too and thinking of taking the certification examination . I was
going to buy k n kings book ( java programming from the beginning it was
suggested on the site as good it seems explanatory . what would you suggest
also I am studing for the exam on my own
how would anyone advice me go by it .I am still trying to learn the
fundamentals and also use the time to study for the exam . however this book
does not cover threads and some other topics how would you advice me to
start my preparation ???

JavaRanch has a whole book review section called the BunkHouse. There is a section for Java - Beginner and a separate section for Java Certification.
You should probably get a book from each of those sections. Just click on the book title and it will take you to Amazon.com to buy it.
