Well I just passed the exam today...as you can see the posts, I was still asking questions 2 hours before the test. Thanks everybody.
But I have a question. I know everybody was saying how the cut-off was 70%, and I was getting around that on the marcus green exams. But when I took the exam, they told me (after the exam), that the cut-off for passing is 52%. What's the deal.
I have to admit though that I got an embarrassing 73%. I wasn't surprised. I really wasn't as comfortable with Threads as I should have been, and I got killed on those questions, nor was I as comfortable with assertions, though I thought I was. So now atleast I know what things I need to study up on.
So can somebody explain to me if I got this wrong, or is the cut-off really 52%?

Congratulations Wilson! I envy you 'cause now you can just chill out and smile and enjoy being stress-free for a while. (oops!, does that sentence actually rhyme)
Can't say the same for me though. I'm taking the test on Tuesday. stress.. stressss ....

Hey Rory, I was in your shoes two weeks ago and feeling uncertain as well! But if you are getting in the high 70s/80s in the mocks, and in the 90s in the Javaranch rules round-up, then you can feel confident about the exam.

Bearing in mind how much you had to learn in such a short space of time, I would say that your score is terrific!

Hi Roger. I am indeed getting decent scores in the mocks, so your words of encouragement are making me feel a little more relaxed. Thanks.

Hearing all these raves about the Kathy Bates book, makes me wish I had gotten that. I was using the Sybex Java Certification book. Which was alright.
I have to admit though that I was disappointed to find out that the passing mark was 52%, I think the standard should be slightly higher, like 65% at least (like High School). I guess my next steps are to figure out threads some more, and actually write some programs with Threads, and then start looking at the developers exam.

Wilson -
Congratulations! Your score is great!
One year ago Sun started the process to create the SCJP 1.4 cert, by giving a beta version of the exam to hundreds of candidates. The field of candidates who took the beta was strong, it included many 1.2 cert holders and other Java luminaries. Sun has always wanted their certifications to be tough!
Sun does not release the overall pass rate but the general concensus is that more people fail Sun certifications than any other certifications in the industry. They adjusted the previous pass rate (low 60s ?), to 52% because otherwise the pass rate from the beta would have been too low!
The SCJP 1.4 is a tough test!!!
JavaRanch is a very elite environment - 73% is an excellent score!

Thanks for everybody's support. I definitely, definitely have to say that finding this forum was great in terms of knowledge. As for my length of study. It is kind of hard for me to put an exact time line, because I started sometime during the end of November...but then I put it off for 2 months because I was moving. So the even though I did some studying before February, I really didn't go hardcore until then. I would say total, I probably spent about 4 1/2 to 5 months. Take a lot of mock exams, use it as a way to gauge what you don't know.
