This was my second crack at this exam
both goes I scored 55% both times, I say third time lucky, with more study, and exam practise.
The question is would it be worth learning the extra stuff and doing the 1.4 exam instead of the 1.2?

Well, I would say it depends on whether you need certification on the 1.2 platform or it wouldn't really matter if you were certified on 1.4.
Remember 1.4 doesn't have questions on IO or AWT, and a few other things have changed (like assertions). So, the real question is, what questions are you losing points on when you take the test??? If you're having problems with the regular language constructs then it wouldn't matter much if you take the 1.4 test because you'd still be having problems on .. well .. the same problems.
You've just gotta hit the books, post your questions around here. We'll help you pass!

I also failed my first try and I realized my mistakes, not spending enough time in reviewing the right stuff, coding, not understanding its key concepts and short time of reviewing, some work and home problem.
I reviewed using only Sun trng. manual resources, reviewed for 3 mos. (while working) and failed 58% then got sick. I asked God for another strength. I continued my reviews. I found JavaRanch, read their recommendations, referrals, and bought them.
All in all I bought 3 reviewers borrowed 2 more but the best of among of them is the JQPlus (I hate advertising but it's a fact). I reviewed for another year (while working, I can't afford to absent). I Mustered all my strength then took the exam. God is faithful I passed the exam.
I hope this will help you.

agree 100% Nathaniel. If you failed the exam mainly because AWT or IO, then consider switching to 1.4.
cheers

Fitz,
Do not get dicouraged. With two attempts, you now know the pattern of questions asked. When you study for the third attempt - which you should - you'll have a clear notion on what lines to study.
Work hard, without caring for the results. Work in the right direction, get assistance from the ones you know have cleared the exam. Practice, practice and practice!
Participate in the discussions here. Post your questions and opinions.
With time and effort, you'll succeed.
Best luck,
Saket

Fitz,
Don't give up!
I feel you should switch over to 1.4 because in my experience the questions on assertions and collections seemed easier than those on IO and AWT.
Also when you pass this time you will have the extra satisfaction of having cleared the latest version of the exam!
Remember: failing the exam does not make you any less knowledgeable in java than majority of us and all you are trying to do is to reach a milestone. With this in mind practice hard with the codes and I am sure the smile will be back on your face soon.

Watch your weakness and try to cover all material I knew some people filed 3 time so dont give up and be sure you will pass next time I think you should complete 1.2 and ignore 1.4 that make you little confused so if you get will in I/O then do 1.2 .
