Hey all,
I passed the 1.4 exam this afternoon with an 80% - not as high as I would have liked, but... scr%w it! Thanks to my wife who put up wth my crap for the last 6 weeks, to Chris who ran my Fantasy Football League in my absence, and to everyone at JavaRanch for providing such a great forum. I used exclusively Kathy's and Bert's excellent book (to anyone looking for a good book THIS is the book to buy), studied for 5 weeks and spent the last week taking mock exams (Marcus Green's, Dan Chisolm's and the Exams that came with the book) and brushing up. Overall the test was a little harder than I had anticipated. I got 6 questions on Garbage Collection and only got 2 of them right (yuk!). There were also a lot of questions on Threads, but I did fairly well on that section (75%). Anyway - despite the "low" score I'm BUSTIN'!!! I can now put that SCJP 1.4 by my name!!!

Brian -
Congrats!
You gotta remember you're on JavaRanch, where some people are upset if they ONLY get a 90%
This is a HARD exam - that's why passing is 51% !!!
80% is a rockin' good score!
-Bert
p.s. I keep telling everyone that the GC stuff is tough!

Thanks Bert - unfortunately I'm one of those people!
Just kidding. The exam IS difficult, but worth the satisfaction of seeing that "Test Status: PASS" on the print-out. Let this be a lesson to all my fellow greenhorns - study hard - especially threads and garbage collection. I had originally planned to schedule my exam for 8/16, but figured I'd give myself an extra week. That extra week made ALL the difference in not just doing well on the exam, but - more importantly - in understanding some key concepts (except for Garbage Collection apparently). It's important that everyone who has yet to take the exam realizes this, oft unrecognized, point: regardless of for what overt reason you're taking the exam (more money, better job, inherently masochistic nature...) the underlying reason is to simply better understand the Java Programming language. Passing the exam is testament to the rest of the world that you have met Sun's minimum requirements. The REAL reward however, lies along the road that led to that point. Thanks again to Kathy and Bert for providing such a lucid and entertaining study guide and to everyone else who were this cow-poke's companions along that dusty trail. Giddyup!
Note to trail boss: If I say "cow-poke" again, ban me from the forum.
