95%! Whew!
I just returned from the testing center (after having Indian buffet to celebrate). I'm so impressed with the way the Sierra/Bates book prepared me. Thanks, Kathy and Bert and all the folks at JavaRanch! (Honorable mention also goes to www.javacertificate.com for their free practice exams.)
I hear something cold calling from my fridge...

Congrats, you over-achiever! I just passed a couple days ago with 68% and I had a hard time with the test. Some friends of mine also took the test at the same time and failed.

Thanks, Monika.
To prepare for the exam, I read The Java Programming Language, Third Edition, and read parts of The Java Language Specification, both from Sun. Then I studied Kathy and Bert's Sun Certified Java Programmer and Developer book, worked all code examples, expanding them, breaking them and learning how to fix what I broke.
I also worked all practice exam questions from K&B, and worked a lot of practice questions with exams from JavaCertificate, a site dedicated to helping people pass the SCJP. For fun, I also wore out the Java Rules Roundup from this great site.
This took about three weeks, but I have built some real Java programs over the past two years, so I had a head start. Three days before the exam, I felt so prepared that I stopped studying and just played with threads to help bolster my understanding of them. (I scored 100% on threads.)
You know, I learned so much from that three weeks of studying that I will plan and write my next Java application much differently than I had in the past. And I'm having so much fun reading Java articles and code samples because I understand what I'm reading! I'm no longer baffled by some of the subtleties that used to stop me in my tracks.
I'm already studying for the Developer exam and I've already had some contact by several people regarding potential Java work. (I'd love to see a discussion topic area focused solely on whether -- and how -- attaining the Sun certs have helped people in their jobs and careers. JavaRanch folks -- any chance of setting that up?)
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Jeff

Thanks everyone!
I sure hope that good job comes through. Meanwhile, I've started studying for the SCJD exam, just in case that good job's still a mile or two away...
Cheers!
Jeff
