Hi All,
I just came back from SCJP2 exam...Well I passed with 91%
I am feeling pretty good right now....the exam is over after allllllll...
Couple of days back I was feeling very distressed as Vikings lost ,I was thinking of postphoneing the exam..but oh well decided to gush it out...
Well I have to thank Kathy and Bert !! The book helped a lot for the exam. I started my preparation on Dec 16th...I had only prepared for 2 weeks, I felt that is more than enough time, if you are working on java. I took lot of mock exams...Marcus and Dan (thanks guys), K&B which gave a good grasp. Also went thru JLS.
I felt the actual exam was much easier than mock exams.
Key to exam is: Comprehend all in short time!! do not prolong it.
Thanks everyone in Javaranch, Time to move on to other exams....
Cheers
Venkatesh

Hi intelli,
I am working in java for nearly 3-4 years now...Still there are lot of gottcha kind of questions in the exam, which you cannot encounter at work. But preparation for this exam was a good experience as a whole. It gave more insight and depth to knowledge.
Some tips I thought I will share
--------------------------------
K&B is the best book for this exam. Especially the 2 minute drill is all that you need.
One of the best way to read K&B is to read the 2 minute drill first and then go inside and read detail. That way it keeps you focused on the topic you are reading.
Khalid Mogul is also a good book but its too twisted...if you follow it you will like it. I refered for some conversion stuff.
JLS is also good resource. Not necessary for the exam, it just gives extra heat.
On the exam
-----------
The exam has lot of Threads questions and they are not very straight, need to be strong in this area...James Gosling is good book for this, but K&B is also Ok. Apart from that everyting else is *fundamentals*....Some things need to be remembered...The technique is make something you will remember for e.g which I call Venky's Tips (VT's)
For collection make a chart like

You see from above you have prefixes Vs Collection interfaces , you get the classes isn't that simple to remember....I think James Gosling thought the same when he designed this language
Make such lot of things(VT's) , which will be handy in exam.
Even if you are in shower you can revise the whole book ...
I think its not to work hard, but work smart... (don't buy this )
Garbage collection also had lot of tough questions.....but mock exam gives good questions to be prepared.
This is all I have to say for now.....
Cheers
Venkatesh....

Hi Venkatesh,
First of all congratulations. What made you to write SCJP 1.4 after four years of working in Java? iam just curious to know why you got idea of writing certification after 4 years of expertise in Java-- Is any benefit you are getting through certification or Just prove yourself for self satisfaction.
I would like to know the answer, once one of my senior said , all certification no matter, once you are experienced. Thats reason iam asking this question.
Thanks

Hi Praveena,
Thanks, I know there are lot of opinions that people should take certifications or not...It is basically what you want to do. Also I will bet how much ever the person is experienced the exam is not easy to pass. You will need lot of preparation.
For me the main reason was , I wanted to take other IBM exams, which had a pre-requisite of SCJP. Also I wanted to take this exam from the beginning, even when ver 1.1 was released but never got chance due to my busy schedule.
Now I had opportunity to take this exam, so I did it.
Now talking about the value of certifications, I myself have done some interviews and when we see the resumes, we see first the person has done any certifications, that shows how much the person is competetive and knowledgeable, well that is the bench mark to measure ones ability, you cannot judge one persons capability by talking for an hour, you will need more than that.
I strongly beleive in certifications...they are definitely going to be the benchmark for industries in future...
