Congratulations Jon!
Yes, the best way to learn
Java for the first time is by reading any Java fundamentals textbook or any
SCJP study guide. After reading each chapter in the Java fundamentals textbook or SCJP study guide, then the reader should go to my web site and do the single topic mock exam that covers the topics that were presented in the chapter of the textbook. My mock exams are intended to serve as a workbook to accompany any Java fundamentals textbook or any SCJP study guide. The same is true of my new book. (Please see the link in my signature.) The text that precedes the mock exam in each chapter of my book is intended to provide a convenient preview of the material covered in the mock exam. That text was written based on the assumption that the reader is not interested in reading more than a quick review of previously learned material. In other words, my new book is not intended to replace any existing book. Instead, my new book is intended to be used along with any existing Java fundamentals textbook or any SCJP study guide.
My biased opinion is that anyone that is studying for the exam should have a copy of my book.
