While I have been in the IT industry for almost 30 years in a variety of roles I have never written any Java. Last summer I got a job as an enterprise architect and thought SCEA might be useful. I decided to start with SCJP, even though its not required.

I started in May and spent 200 hrs studying over the past 7 months. Read Exam Cram first then most of Sierra and Bates' book. Did the Prep Logic Exam, two Whiz labs Exams, two Master Exams (from the Sierra/Bates book), and Marcus Green's exam. I stopped WhizLabs cause they seemed to ask a number of question beyond the scope of the objectives. I wanted to stay focused on the objectives. (In retrospect, having now taken the exam, my assessment appears accurate).

In general I found almost all the exam questions easier than the mock exams, except for garbage collection and threads. (Thought I knew those areas and yet I scored the poorest on those sections.) Most of the questions were shorter code snippets whereas many of the mock exam questions seemed lengthy.

I got lots of questions on Strings plus the usual suspects: method and class declarations, constructors, overloading, overriding, keywords, operators, casting, switch, for, command line args, etc. Overall, more questions on language basics and fewer of the obscure, scratch your head, complex code snippets the mock exams offer up. [Thank-you SUN!!] One of the trickier questions on the exam is a VERY close to one of the mock questions in Sierra/Bates masterexam - their book should be at the top of your list.
