Hi Ranchers

Today I cleared my SCJP 1.4 91%. I like to thank all of the ranchers who help me. My special thanks to Kathy & Bert , Khalid Mughal for their wonderful books, Jim yinst, Barry gaunt for their clear explanations to some of my doubts and their wonderful contribution to the group( you people are grooming young java minds). My examination experience is some thing that can be compared with that of a Hollywood thriller movie. Just like every one I started my exam and every thing was very smooth. Questions were easy and by the time I reached my last question I was confident that I will definetely score 80 Plus. Story starts(Real one) When I was attending my 58th Question Power went off. The UPS started giving warning and I thought there should be some back system and I didn't care about it much. By the time I was attending my 61th question( last one) my monitor went dark. Yes the power went off totally. I am still having 55 minutes left to complete the exam. I contacted the prometric guys and to my bad luck power went off for the entire building. I was asked to wait for 5 minutes. Then it became 10, 20... finally after a hour and 15 minutes I was allowed to continue the exam. Each minute was killing me. Thank God power came back. At some point I thought I have to redo the exam tomorrow. Luckly that didn't happen.

Regarding my preparation I used

1. K & B Book ( Good to start with. Learning is fun with this book. Certain topics are not covered indepth. Example: Collections, Initializers)
2. Khalid Mughal Book( Tough book - Don't start with this book unless you have some previous experience with java. Once u complete K & B Book start with this. You can find real tough questions here. )

Threads - Here all you have to concentrate is whether (1. join, 2.sleep, 3.wait) methods are called within a try/catch block (or) not. If not so then compiler error. Then (1.wait, notify, notifyall) should be called with a synchronized code. If not runtime error will occur. Most of the questions will be around [ join, wait, starting a thread, implementing runnable]

Inner class - Here a method local inner class cannot be instantiated before it is defined. It can access only final local variables of the enclosing methods. static inner class cannot access nonstatic members of the enclosing class. non-static inner class cannot have static declarations with in them.

arrays - whether an array is declared with in a method or not it will be initialized with its default values. When u try to access an array that is not initialized then nullpointer exception will occur.

operator - Questions will be testing your knowledge of the difference between ( short circuit operators &&, ||) and bitwise( &, |) operators.

Collections - This is very important not only for your SCJP Exam but for your whole Java career(mainly during interviews). A good understanding of each of the classes ( which class comes under which interface ) will help in long run.

oops - A subclass reference cannot refer a super class object. Look for classcastexception type questions and a class with private constructor cannot be subclassed.

My advise would be

Make sure you visit SCJP forum atleast once in a day and try solving others questions.

As a beginner take seperate topic tests from Dan Chisholm study guide. This will definitely refine your java skills.

Without taking alteast 5 full tests don't go for the exam. There are lots of mock exams available for free.

1. Write both the K&B exam
2. all 4 marcus green exam
3. Majji

and as many full time exams as you can.

I consider this as the toughtest exam of all and it helped me a lot both at exam and concept understanding point of view.

I hope this helps someone.

Hi All,
I really got worried after seeing this Power Problem. If such thing happens then whether we have to start the test from the begining or we will be allowed to continue from where we left. Can anyone clear me on this.
