I passed SCWCD 5 exam an hour ago with 92% (64/69).

I've prepared for about one month and read HFSJ twice. I did some mock tests from JavaRanch, JDiscuss and Examulator.

Exam is practically identical to 1.4 version - I had no questions on var-args, annotations or generics. Some questions ask explicitly about J2EE 1.4 web applications (probably someone forgot to update them). And there are questions about design patters and EL functions on the exam (even if they are not listed in the Objectives).

I suggest to all ranchers who prepare to the 1.4 version to take the new one... It looks much better in the CV

Thanks.

The SCBCD 1.3 exam will be my next certification step, but after a long break for some non-technical fantasy books

To get 92% without referring to any other book than HF says a lot about the book.

Is there any difference between SCWCD 1.4 and SCWCD 5? If we prepare for SCWCD 1.4, can we pass the exam for SCWCD 5? Please let me know.

I didn't notice any differencies between 1.4 mock exams and real 5.0 exam.
The scope of objectives is the same and I had no questions about multiple url-pattern or servlet-name elements in DD (available since Servlet 2.5) or any other Java 5.0 related topics...

The only difference is the passing score - 71% (yes, 49/69 is 71%, not 70% as Sun claims ) instead 63% (and yes, 44/69 is 63%, not 62% as Sun claims ).

Do you suggest me to take up SCWCD 1.4 or 5. I dont know any of the APIs in SCWCD 5. I'm worried if there is something new.

Let me know how to go about it.

I suggest to take the SCWCD 5 exam. There are some differencies in specification (you can find the materials on the SCWCD5 links site). I read those materials only once, one evening before the exam - but I didn't have any 5.0 specific questions, so don't worry and register for the 310-083 exam

Congratulations Aleksander Switalski...

Can you please tell us how were the new questions as compared to the j2ee1.4 version? You must have given mock exams for 1.4 version???

The difficulty and scope of the SCWCD 5 questions seem to be identical - when compared to the noticed above 1.4 mock exams.

Hi Aleksander,

The new specification for SCWCD5 is huge and overwhelming. It would be great if you could jot down some differences between SCWCD 1.4 and SCWCD 5. Any specific topics that I need to cover for SCWCD 5 apart from 1.4. I'm planning to take the exam in 4 to 5 days. Pls respond quickly.

Regards,
Kumar.

I spent one month on preparations (usually 2 hours per day) and I have 4-year experience in developing web applications.

If you are worried about the exam title. Read the text below.

"The updated SCWCD exam is called "Sun Certified Web Component Developer for the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition 5" (CX-310-083), but don't get confused by the title. The updated exam is still designed for Java EE v1.4 and for the servlet 2.4 and JSP v2.0 specifications." (Head First Servlets and JSP, page xxviii)
