Go to the "OO, Patterns, UML and Refactoring" forum under Engineering. That forum is really great for the IBM 486 Object Oriented Analysis and Design with UML. Also go to IBM and do the ICE exam for the 486. It is a great way to prepare. Study Criag Larman's book "Applying UML and Patterns" as well as UML Distilled by Fowler. This Javaranch forum is one of the best education platforms for this exam.
Also it is not a certification. It counts towards the IBM Solutions Developer. This goes into the JCert iniative (www.jcert.org). Go under IBM roadmap in the jcert site and you can see where it fits in. You will need a SCJP and now you will probably not go for VisualAge for Java certification (IBM # 283). You will go for Websphere Studio Applications Developer (WSAD IBM #157)certification for you IDE Cert.

You need to take the IBM #486, (Object Oriented Analysis and Design with UML) and pass it as part of the Solution Developer. But you will not receive any certificate for passing it by itself. It is only when you have all of the 3 tests done (SCJP2, IBM#486 and IBM #157) that you will receive the certificate "Solution Developer for IBM WebSphere Studio Application Developer.
You will receive a certificate from Sun for the SCJP2 and a certificate from IBM as being a IBM Specialist for the WebSphere Studio Applications Developer for passing the IBM #157. But you will receive nothing right away for passing the IBM #486.

So it means that if I pass 486, I will just have the marksheet; I won't receive a certificate from IBM unless I clear either the Websphere or Weblogic exams. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Also, I would like to know if the sequence of giving these exams is fixed, eg. can I give the Websphere/Weblogic exam before 486.
Thanks in advance.

That's right, all you will have for your hours of work is a marksheet that you get from Prometrics at the end of exam. You can frame that if you want. You will feel like it after you have passed this exam.
There is no Weblogic offering in the Solution Developer that I know of. There is for the Enterprise Developer.
The order I took it in was IBM 486, IBM 283 and then the SCJP2. In short you can take it in any order you want to. I dated myself a bit. You would no longer want to take the IBM 283 (VisualAge) because that is being phased out in December 2002.

Thanks Garth for replying.
I am sorry if this sounds as if I am trying to contradict you, but I went through the jCert website, and from the foll. link, it looks as if there is indeed a specified sequence of taking the exams. Please have a look at the "Prerequisites" row.
http://www.jcert.org/textversion/skills_roadmap.html
Also, could you please tell me, which of the two - Solutions Developer or Enterprise Developer is in demand in the market right now, and what are the major differences between the two.
One last query, I remember seeing some posts in some other forum of our beloved Javaranch, which suggested that SCWCD would be a part of jCert. Is this a rumor, or is there an element of truth in it.
Thanks,
Prasanna.

Your point is well taken. They appear to imply a sequence in the JCert RoadMap. I took my tests out of sequence and still achieved Certified Solution Developer is my point. I understood the sequence as saying that in order for you to get final Certification you needed all of the proceeding work done. I was allowed to take the tests even though I had not completed the ones before them in the sequence. Some people started out getting the IBM 157 test just to get a Specialist for Websphere Studio Application Developer (Which is a IBM Certification in and of itself) and then decided later to persue the Solution Developer. It would not make sense to say that he/she could not do that because he/she would break the sequence. Or worse yet that he would have to go back and take the SCJP2, IBM 486 and then retake the Websphere Studio Application Developer exam. I hope I don't sound like I am rambling.
I want to go for SCWCD pretty soon. I was not aware of plans that it would be a part of the JCert.
You need the Solution Developer to get the Enterprise Developer. I do not have any market data behind me to indicate how market sees these tests. I know that a lot of companies have stayed away from EJB's because of expense. The skills that match the Solution Developer and the SCWCD are what is really needed out there right now in my humble opinion.
The Solution Developer does not deal with EJB's, RMI, Corba, JNDI etc. It is pretty much dealing with working with core Java in a IDE as well as good Analysis and Design skills. The Websphere Studio Application Developer version of Solution Developer needs background in JSP as well. That was not a part of the VisualAge for Java version that I took. I think that the Solution Developer is a tremendous foundation to build from.
The Enterprise Developer is getting into the upper end of the J2EE. It gets into EJB's etc as listed above. It also gets into working with the Applications Servers.
I think that both the Solution Developer and the Enterprise Developer are important. The skills in both areas will be important. I would be hard pressed to rate one over the other.
