Hello,
Are there any forums like Java Ranch for the Oracle developer certs? I have just ordered the SCWCD Study Kit and will be taking that certification within the next few weeks. I have been getting into Oracle and JDBC programming and would like to next go after the certification from oracle. If anyone knows of any forums for Oracle like this one that would be great.
Thanks,
Kenny

How is the DBA cert more approriate if I am a java developer? Is it important for a developer to understand database administration? I guess I need to look at the two certs and see the differences.

I think it depends really on how in-depth you are expected to go or are interested in going on the DB end. I suspect that, as a developer, your time might be better served going for their development certifications rather than a full-blown DBA.

well there are 4 exams.
SQL, Architecture & Admin I, Architecture & Admin I, Performance tuning.
The only stuff not relevant to a java developer is backup & recovery which forms around half of the 3rd exam.
The OCP Developer exam is more focused towards oracle forms which is not relevant to a java developer.

Simon,
When could you get the certificate of Oracle Certified DBA? After passing all the tests?
How much do they cost? How long it might take
to prepare if you have never been a DBA before?
I'm thinking switching from a Java Architect/Developer to a DBA.
Thanks.

Oracle DBA Certification is a strange beast. If you start off with 9i, you have to attend a training course with Oracle Educational partners which would cost you a bomb. But if you start off with 8i, there is no need for this. You can always upgrade to 9i with one exam. This could still save you a lot of money. Moreover there are too many sites running 8i even now. But 8i has 5 exams instead of 4 for 9i (Backup recovery and network admn are merged into one in 9i).
For an active forum for Oracle Certification please look up Oracle Pipelines at revealnet.com
Good Luck and best wishes

To answer your other queries - if you have some database and SQL exposure, you can complete the certification in about 3-4 months time. If not it could take about 3 months more.
The exams cost $125 in US but usually you can manage 20% discount with an account otn.oracle.com

I just passed the Oracle 9i Associate Developer Exame 1: Introduction to SQL.
From the discussion here, it seems more appropriate to take DBA certification than developer certification. Does that mean that I should change my certification direction.
From the discussion, I found that to take DBA exam, a person should take training class with an Oracle authorized training partner. Does that apply to the Oracle certified developer too ?
Thanks,

I know that the oracle training class is so expensive that it is not funny
there is no way a person can afford it him/her self unless that person is very rich
