Passed the SCJP on 9-12. Passed the DB2 Fundamentals today, two weeks
later. I'm on fire !!!
It is hard for me to tell if this is a difficult exam or not since I've
been using SQL for a good number of years. As an exam, I think it's a
credible test of basic database skills. You need to know the difference
between INNER, FULL OUTER, as well as RIGHT and LEFT OUTER JOINS. You
also need to know about isolation levels, how locks are acquired and
escalated and last but not least the proper use of constraints and indices.
The IBM Press book (Baklarz, Wong) is good preparation and a wise buy
particularly if you plan to go onto the 701 DBA exam. The book is not
enough prep though, although it will take you 85% of the way there. I'd
strongly advise test takers to review the IBM DB2 SQL Reference documents.
These are available for free from the DB2 developerWorks web site. In
particular, review all of the features of CREATE TABLE, ALTER TABLE, GRANT.
Further, you need to understand how to invoke stored procedures with all
argument types and the permissions needed to create and execute stored
If you dont download the product and install it, you are doing yourself
a big disservice. You could probably pass the DB2 exam pretty easily if
you already are Oracle Savvy and read the book.... However, kicking the
tires on the actual product is very impressive. You can download a full
eval version of the ESE from IBM for Linux. The IBM Press preparation book
comes with DB2 Personal Edition for Windows.
Next goal, SCWCD, hopefully by early November.
