So here is take two!!
I have just passed my SCJP this Monday. Thanks, no applauses needed, ok maybe just a little . Now what??? There are the Sun's certifications and the IBM ones. My employer would like me to take the IBM certifications because we are partners. Ok, but which one should I go for first. Can I bypass certs 285 and go straight to 287 on the IBM certs?? Should I concentrate on SCEA?? This is the first question.
Second question is, which book should I get assuming I decide to do SCEZ or 287 ??
And third and last, What is the big diffrence between 287 and 484 and if you do 287 do you still have to take 286 and 287??
That's about it for now.
My boss likes IBM too... we are also partners.
You can go straight to the 287 whenever you feel ready.
Buy my book

Any more questions? I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, now or in the not too distant future
Life is full of difficult decisions...
I must admit that (IMNSHO) IBM has superior products.
Also the IBM certs require in depth knowledge of the specs as well as real work experience. It's not all about their tooling. You might want to check out the sample tests at:

Could some one tell me what does it mean to have a JCert Certficate , and wat is written on the certificate [ what if i take BEA instead of IBM ]
I am confused as well.
could some throw some light please
Eh Howard, (I may be French, but I am Canadian too, eh!!!) are you like IBM, if we pass our certification with your book, do you reimburse???
Thanks for your comments, life you said Howard, like IS full of difficult decisions. Like this weekend, all this time and I don't know what I'm going to do. I think I'll start with a well deserved beer to celebrate my newly SCJP certification. Can you believe I haven't had one yet!!! , have one for me will ya boys!!

I should probably publish the preface to the book in PDF somewhere. It would help put it all in perspective.

That's really two questions, ya know.
* How do JCert Enterprise Developer certs compare against SCEA?
They're separate animals, imho. SCEA is a software architect's exam, showing that you can design a system based on the requirements and explain it. ED is a series of exams showing capability of building an enterprise-class application using a vendor-specific tool/appserver. While going through the ED process, you do end up showing ability to architect, it does tend to go further and lean towards a specific vendor whereas SCEA is more neutral.
* Which cert (SCEA vs. JCert ED) is more valued by employers?
Depends on the employer, and on whether or not they're using an appserver or tool that has a JCert ED exam. Certs are only worth what an employer's or a given test-taker's willing to consider them to be worth. I don't think there's any way to find a specific dollar value it bumps one's salary, for instance.
I always felt people know more about SCEA than the JCert enterprise developer stuff. I may be totally wrong, but this has been my perception. Any opinion here ?
I also wonder why JCert doesn't include SCWCD, SCBCD in its exam list for getting JCert-ED qualified ? It does have IBM-484, than why not the Sun's eqivalent SCWCD and SCBCD together ?
