This may because the exam is still not popular, and thus, less people go for the exam before.
Also, there seems no books particularly for this exam.

I took the Fundamental exam about a month ago. To prepare, I read chapters 1-5 of UML 2 Toolkit (Erikson et al).
At least 20% of the questions on the test weren't covered in the book, so I had to just randomly guess. I passed, but not by much.
I've taken 14 certification tests so far, and this was the most time-challenging one of all - there were 80 questions to answer in 90 minutes.
OMG doesn't have much of a support organization for these tests. I sent around four emails to different *.omg.org addresses to ask if my certificate has been mailed, and no one has ever replied.

I'm preparing for this exam too. I use Craig Larman's UML book although it is written for version 1.0. Anyways, here is the link that I found useful :-

I spent around 3 weeks studying for the Fundamental exam (2 or 3 hours a day). The UML 2 Toolkit book is well-writen, but doesn't cover certain areas to the detail required by some test questions (particularly for class and activity diagrams).
It took about a month after taking the test before I received the certificate (in the US).

I'm putting together a certification plan for the folks I work with and am looking into training for this certification. Has anyone had any formalized training for the UML certifiction? Would you recommend the training you've had? What can you tell me about the exams besides what has already been posted?

This is about what Ewing has written. The UML toolkit has a chapter on real-time modeling which sees to cover quite a bit about activity diagrams. Can't imagine how the questions could be tougher than what is covered as far as activity diagrams are concerned.

I primarily use UML user guide and UML reference manual both books written by James Rumbaugh, Ivar Jacobson and Gady booch(the three amigos who came up with UML in the first place)
I dont think this is based on UML 1.5 but still it gives a good understanding on UML and then going through the specs will be much easier.
Planning to take the exam in august/september since currently engaged with toooo much work

I have found the "UML 2 cert guide: fundimental and intermediate" (ISBN 0123735858) book to be wonderful.
explains a lot about what, how, why.
In the two days I have had the book it has changed/enhanced my UML tremendiously.

NO wasted ink, or white space.

I did my OCUP fundamental certification in a Prometric site last december 2006.

Whatever book you buy, make shure to also read all topics in the UML superstruture that are mentioned in OMG's coverage plan.

*All* questions for the fundamental certificate exam are about the superstructure contents mentioned in the coverage plan.

Hi Jan/Peter,

Thanks for your advice. Could you please also tell if you prepared from any practice exams as well. I have also ordered "UML 2 cert guide: fundamental and intermediate" to prepare for the OMG UML Exam.

Thanks again for your help!

To train my on-line exam skills, I used Mikalai Zaikin's Magnet Mocker exams for IBM 486.
Although they do not exactly cover OCUP scope, these mock exams made me feel comfortable when doing the actual exam.
It helped to understand how these exams work, and what type of questions to expect.

The "UML 2 cert guide: fundamental and intermediate" is not available for me yet, but I'm planning to buy it to practice for the intermediate exam.

Guys,

I googled quite some companies that sell exam simulators for the OM0-100. I never heard about any of them, though, judging by how professional their websites look, I would mention these:

http://www.troytec.com/exams/OCUP.html (interesting exam simulator demo)
http://www.testking.com/OCUP-certification-training.htm

Has anyone ever had either good or bad experiences with those companies? Has used and would suggest another products?

Any considerations are much appreciated.

These days a 12 year old kid can make a professional looking website

Both of those are brain dump sites.

Peter,

Don't get me wrong, I am against any form of cheating. But how can we know if they're selling brain dumps if it's not said so? As far as I'm concerned, they're just selling legal simulators like the ones from Whizlabs. Am I being naive?

Hello;
I would tend to think test king is a testing enging slapped on to a brain dump.

If you look at the lower left corner of test king. It shows "sponsored by by exact exam" --- brain dump central---

also test kings product name and general description (169 questions) is exactly the same as exactly the same as exact exams.

In my research to determine whether ACE-IT was a brain dump site or not (time could have been better spent learning for my exam!), I discovered quite easily a whole host of information about these brain dump sites. They are easily recognizable. Some of them include:

cheat-test.com, hotcerts.com, certsheets.com, ace-it-certifications.com, pass-guaranteed.com, testking.com, 21certify.com, certifysky.com, cheatyourexams.com, exam-king.com, eecert.com, real-exams.com

You'll notice they all have virtually the same text. It's a simple SEO-technique using templates with only the look/css differing from one site to the next and a few other bits of information.

What I discovered is that they are all just resellers for http://www.xxyyinc.com/ or other organisations. These are the organisations that somehow get hold of the real exam questions either by brain dumps or by unauthorized/inside access to the prometric network etc.

These resellers like Testking.com etc. just compete to optimize and promote their sites via SEO, PPC etc. but they are all pretty much selling the same identical content from the wholesaler.

Testking.com is well known as a brain dump site. Just Google for it and/or search Javaranch forums. The other one mentioned, Troytech, had give away clues but I have zero proof that it is a brain dump site. It may be legitimate and looks different to the others I have seen. The lack of company information would worry me. Would you pay money to a company you knew nothing about?

Infact, if you do a Google search on the relevant domain(s) for "brain dump" you're bound to be presented with some SEO optimized pages that are designed to be seen by people specifically looking for brain dump sites! However, in general they specifically avoid mentioning "brain dump" to infer some level of credibility. Isn't that what you would do?

Hope all of that makes sense.

Everyone is free to use these sites or not if they want to. It's not for me to say whether one should or shouldn't. Personally, I don't see the point and so I won't be pursuing that route.

Whizlabs is a reputable company with a long history offering preparation kits for a much narrower set of certifications and qualifications. Some of the brain dump sites try to mimic some of the features of the Whizlab sites but it's pretty transparent to me what they really are.

Good luck!

Guys, I know that the exam is multiple choices, but is it multiple answers? If so, does each question tell you how many right answers to choose from?

Another question regarding the detailing level of the exam questions:

What level of metamodel memorization is needed to succeed in this exam? I mean, do we have to know by heart all attributes, associations, constraints and all additional operations for all metamodel classes?

If anyone who took the exam could answer this, I would really appreciate it.

Hi Filipe,

I gave quite a detailed analysis of the exam content on this thread:
https://coderanch.com/t/145682/po/certification/Passed-OMG-Certified-UML-Fundamental

As far as I'm aware it is the most detailed information on the OCUP Fundamental exam on Javaranch, if not anywhere! It is very hard to come by information on this exam.

As for the level of detail needed for memorization, it's very hard to say what is the right level.

For example, you need to know that a comment element can have an association with zero or more than one other element. In the metamodel, this is represented as a * on the association end. If you weren't paying attention to the metamodel, you may have missed this. Fortunately, this is where practical experience with UML may help you out.

If you have a fundamental understanding of the metamodel, then it doesn't really require explicit memorization of these things as all of the multiplicities and hieracrhies start to become logical and intuitive after a while.

You will need to know the basic generalization hierarchies and what the implications are e.g. an Activity diagram is a specialized behavior. A named element is a specialized element. A packageable element is a specialized named element etc. Try and build an intuitive understanding of what each level of specialization adds to the hierarchy but don't worry too much about memorization.

Good luck.

Feel free to ask any other questions on the matter.

Peter.

Hi Jan or all the others here in the forum.

What do you mean by "OMGs Coverage Plan"? I looked in the superstructure document and did not find such a topic.

Question two:

I have two documents here: the UML2.0 Superstructure Specification and the UML2.0 Infrastructure Specification do I need both to make it through the exam?

At the moment I just read the germany book: "UML 2.0 Zertifizierung. Fundamental, Intermediate und Advanced (Broschiert)
von Tim Weilkiens, Bernd Oestereich"

Is this book enough to make it through the test? I did not much with UML in my daily work.

Thanks an bey

The exam coverage map can be found on the OMG website. It details which part of the superstructure is covered by the exams:

http://www.omg.org/uml-certification/UML_Exams_Coverage_Map.pdf

Question two:

The Fundamental exam is based on parts of the superstructure only.
Specifically, it is based on THIS version of the 2.0 specification:

http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?formal/05-07-04

If you download later versions of the superstructure you will not be able to match up the exam coverage map with the contents of the specification.

I believe if you know the content covered in this book well enough it is good enough to get 95%+ on the exam.

I wrote an analysis of the book and parts that I thought the superstructure covered the material slightly better in this thread here:

https://coderanch.com/t/145682/po/certification/Passed-OMG-Certified-UML-Fundamental

Good luck!

Hi Peter,

it seems that the Coverage Map is not based on the specification: http://www.omg.org/cgi-bin/doc?formal/05-07-04, instead it is based on THIS one: http://www.omg.org/docs/ptc/03-08-02.pdf. It's a little bit confusing. Have any hint?

It's the United Modeling Language 2.0 Proposal (03-08-02) that matches the coverage table (and the exam as I took it December last year).

Hi Jan,

thus, I guess, that you have prepared the exam with the proposal but not the final version of the UML specification, right? Great thanks.
