This cert requires scjp, 484, 486, 287.
What are the materials you guys use to prepare for them?
for 486, i see people recommending Larman's book and UML Distilled by fowler.
What is the sequence you guys usually follow? Btw, is the sequence fixed or i can give any of them first as i want?
How do i go for test? is it the same process as with sun cert(buy voucher, book onin and go for test)? is there any promotion going on?
thanks in advance

Hi Yi,

What are the materials you guys use to prepare for them?
for 486, i see people recommending Larman's book and UML Distilled by fowler.

YES. For 486, the only resources we needed are Larman's Apply UML and Patterns and Fowler's UML Distilled. Basically, although the 3rd edition is out, I recommended the 2nd edition, as the 3rd edition tends to compare the difference between UML 1.x and UML 2.0.
You can gain basic ideas on UML diagrams from Fowler, and then you can have indepth knowledge about OOAD from Larman.
For 484, I basically used HF EJB for EJB part, and SCWCD Exam Study Kit for Servlets and JSP part. For the rest topics, like JDBC, JMS, JAAS, JAXP, etc, you can refer to IBM's site to see the free online tutorials.
For 287, I used Howard's book Developing J2EE applications with IBM WSAD. It is the only book for this test, and you may need to have understanding on J2EE.

What is the sequence you guys usually follow?

My exam sequence is 484, and then 486 and then 287.
Since 287 is vendor specific, while 484 and 486 are vendor independent. I recommend you to take 484 and 486 first, unless you have WSAD experience.
As I have 3 years J2EE experiences, I first take 484.

Btw, is the sequence fixed or i can give any of them first as i want?

NO. The sequence is not fixed.

How do i go for test? is it the same process as with sun cert(buy voucher, book onin and go for test)? is there any promotion going on?

You dont need to buy any vouchers. You can pay for it online when you schedule for the exam.
IBM gives out 2000 free vocuhers during Nov 2003 to Jan 2004. However, the promotion has been ended on Jan 31, 2004.

on ibm website we have
Required Passing Score: 67% for the actual test; 67% for the pre-assessment/sample test

Does it mean that we must take the pre-assessment test and get 67% correct? Is the pre-assessment test free?

Hi Yi,
You dont need to take the preassessment test. You just need to take the real test. The preassessment test is somewhat like a mock exam.
It costs US 10.
