This is more than a look and feel -- it's a whole new UBB. I'm a bit worried what private messaging, buddy/ignore lists, and member rating will lead to. I've already taken advantage of the name changing feature though.

Still no way to set the local time.
Also, it seems much slower. I'm surprised this package uses flat files for data and not a database. I've used some BB that are lightning fast and free.

Most ranchers are very professional, I don't worry at all. And the new function looks fun. hehehe! Maybe the rating will lead to something.
Name changing feature ?? ah... didn't know that.

happy new year all! 2002

The first thing they taught us in engineering schools was ...
"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
You had a great site, this new look and feel really stinks. Change it back. Please!

Please put everything back the way it was!

I think there is a mix of good and bad.
There's a lot of new stuff and I'm not sure how much of it I like and don't.
So far, I'm not too keen on this member rating stuff. What do you guys think?
What are some specific items we should try to disable?

My two cents:
I think the thread page is pretty good. Maybe make the gray lines a little darker.
The thread listing page is perfect except for the icons. The "new post" icon has a wierd little gray square in the upper right corner and the lock on the closed icon is too small.
For the main page, I would eliminate the last post detail info and just go with last date and time.
Did you know that it is possible to display the most recent post headings completely separate from UBB. A friend of mine has a UBB forum and has a display showing the current threads on the main page of his site.

And I would leave the option to allow people to change their display names. That way when you register with the name of SuperJavaGuy you can just fix your display name to meet the JavaRanch naming requirements.

Hmmm. like Paul said there's good and bad. I think people should say here what they like and don't like. If lots of people don't like a certain feature then hopefully we can turn it off.
I don't like the last post listing on the main forum page either nor do I like the Member number appearing, it doesn't have any relevence to anything. I do like the Instant Graemlins and Instant UBB Code feature on the "write post" pages. I need to play more to see what else is around.

How do I change my display name if I want to, even though it is Javaranch compliant? I couldn't find any way to do this.
TIA,
- Manish

I agree -- if at all possible kill this "last post" business. It makes the page too wide to navigate in a smaller window...

I guess most of us agree on not having the "last post". It really makes the look of the page more crowded(?). There is too much information in the last post column. The smilies appearing on the post makes it easier to add one, don't have to remember the code for it.
Later,
Hema

I don't think the new look is as easy on the eye. Didn't there used to be a visual seperator between threads? It just seems to jumbled together, and I agree the last post column on the main page is a real eyesore.
To quote Garth from "Wayne's World"... "We fear change." The biggest problem is that it just isn't the same ol' Ranch we all know and love, but I think we'll get used to it. I've seen worse BB changes, even had to quit a professional one early last year because it just became impossible to navigate.
Looking at the Reply screen, I like the "Instant UBB Code" section. Can we now post images?
P.S. I miss the old "Flames" icon for hot topics! The new one seems kind of retro... sigh...

Why do I now see "close", "lock", and "delete" topic icons at the bottom of the screen. Am I able to "lock" a thread? Does it do this for everyone, or just me.

They were always there. They just sort of blended in. Thats what Bartenders use to manipulate posts. You have to be authorized to use the functions.

... I actually don't mind the last post column... but I also have a 21" monitor and a 1280x1024 screen... so its not squished at all...
