Hello,
Yesterday, I have passed the 287 test.
The exam was little difficult.
Many questions related to EJB,jsp/servlets, cookies,BEST practices and design of these technologies and finally some WASD questions related to UTC,classloaders, profiling and data access.
My preparation focused in the same way as the 484 exam, i add in my preparation the interesting Kushner's book.
The differents posts here related to ICED are very useful and motivant.
My next exam : 486
Thank you everybody.
Ismael.

Congrad!!!
Personally, I feel 287 is the most difficult exam among ICED.
Best luck for 486.

Nicholas,
I will to thank you particularly for your posts and your many interventions in the forum about the ICED, that's help me a lot in my preparation.
I have one question:
How many time have you done for preparing your 486 test?
Thanks in advance,
Ismael.

Congrats Ismael.
Hi Nicholas and Ismael, can you please answer one question.
How many times are we supposed to go through Howard's book to pass the 287 assuming that one has good knowledge of JSP, Servlets and EJB. Have gone through 285 book by "Jacab and Craig" a couple of times.
Thanks for any input.

Hi Ismael,

How many time have you done for preparing your 486 test?

I used 1 week to read through Larman's and Fowler's book once. In addition, I read Larman's notes once 3 hours before the exam.
Since I had 2 years OOAD experiences, together with taken 3 OOAD courses, I found the exam was pretty easy.
You MUST at least read Fowler's book and Larman's notes once if you dont have enough time. Personally, I used Fowler's book 3rd edition, however, I suggest you to read the 2nd edition, although it is about UML version 1.x.
The 3rd edition focus more on the difference between UML 1.x and 2.0, and thus, if you have less OOAD concepts and experiences, reading 2nd edition is better. Larman's book is quite advanced, it covers all major issues about OOAD practices. It is an excellent book, however, it may go too deep for IBM 486. Thus, reading the notes maybe enough (if you just wanna a pass. )
In addition, you MUST practice with ICE. The questions are very very similar to the real exam questions. I feel ICE is a bit difficult than the real exam, as the questions are longer, and the diagrams are more complex.
If you have spare money, you may consider Whizlabs as well. However, I feel it is very expensive to me, even if they have reduced their price a bit.
Again, if you just wanna a pass, it is not that difficult. Read Fowler's book carefully to get all UML diagram concepts. Read Larman's notes to have a rough idea on what OOAD is, and then read Larman's book to get detail info. Practice with ICE to make sure that you really know the concepts. By doing so, you can definitely kill the exam.
Good luck for your exams.
Nick

Hi Satish,

How many times are we supposed to go through Howard's book to pass the 287 assuming that one has good knowledge of JSP, Servlets and EJB.

Due to the expiration of my vouchers, I only used 1 week to study IBM 287. I read through Howard's book only once, and my reading focus on WSAD related concepts, since I got around 2 years J2EE experiences.
I think if you are already SCBCD and SCWCD, you will find no difficulty to understand and answer those EJB, JSP and Serlvets related questions, thus, your focus should be those WSAD related issues, like connection pool, performance tuning, Web Services, etc.

Have gone through 285 book by "Jacab and Craig" a couple of times.

I havent taken IBM 285, and thus, I cannot give any comments on this.

Hi Satish,
For my preparation of the 287, I focused mainly in ejb/jsp/servlets/patterns.
Any ressources related to these technologies do the job, personnaly i used HF (Kathy&Bert)and J2ee Server programming 1.3(WROX).
Also, i develop a little J2EE application with WASD for practicing myself and also for knowing all the aspects of designing, building, packaging and deployment under WASD, it helps me much more for the exam.
For Howard's Book, i focus on chapters related to WASD, I take 2,5 days for reading chapters : 8,10,11,12 and 14.
Ah, don't forget to review the ICE 287 answers posted by Nikhil. It's very helpful.
Thanks,
Ismael.

Hello, I'm coming in late on this discussion and maybe someone can fill in the details. I've taken Sun's EJB exam (SCBCD), I'm going to take the servlets and JSP exam (SCWCD)this weekend (feel pretty good about the material) and next I want to work for possibly IBM 286 or IBM 287. Already knowing the EJB, I think 287 is the better choice, but I'm totally new to Websphere & UML. (for that matter I just started JAVA in January). I heard someone mention a book by Fowler and notes by Larman. Could someone tell me what the titles of these books are, or possibly recommend some good other references to get me ready for 287? Is it true that I'll have to take two other separate tests before I can take the 287?
Kindly,
Chris

For 287, you dont need to know UML. UML will be tested in 486.

Could someone tell me what the titles of these books are, or possibly recommend some good other references to get me ready for 287?

For 287, I strongly recommended Howard's book:
WebSphere Certification Study Guide: Developing J2EE Applications with IBM WebSphere Studio: IBM Certified Enterprise Developer
ISBN:1931182108
This is the only book you need to prepare for 287.

Is it true that I'll have to take two other separate tests before I can take the 287?

NO. You can take those tests (287, 484 and 486) in any order. Becos the passing sequence has no effect.

There are 10-15 questions related to WSAD. For each objective, there are questions related to WSAD, like how to create JSP/Servlet/EJB by WSAD. In addition, the configurations of JMS, as well as the connection pool setting, the server performance tuning are all related to WAS. Since we dont have the WAS, we used WSAD to simulate the situations.
Also the title of the exam is:
Enterprise Application Development with IBM WebSphere Studio, V5.0
Thus, I am not surprised that there are questions related to WSAD.
