I missed the promotion held by IBM last time on many of its certs... Is that promotion held for the upgrade of the WSAD 5.0? What is the main reason for IBM to hold a promotion like this, while Sun does its beta tests usually for the upgrade of the version...

Because I'm on my way to ICED 5.0 and I heard that there will be such kinda promotion from IBM sooner or later... If that period is not that far from now, it's better for me to wait for that, rather than paying the full amount of exam voucher fee...

Any opinion is welcome...

No. The promotion is NOT for the upgrade of WSAD 5.0.

It is mainly to encourage people to take the PRIME test (formly known as ICE test). The ICE test is free in the past, but then IBM turns it to PRIME test, which costs $10. In order to encourage more people to shift from ICE to PRIME, IBM gives out free vouchers for those who took and passed PRIME tests. Of course, we need to pay $10, and if we pass, say PRIME 484, IBM sent us a free voucher to take IBM 484 test.

I am not sure whether IBM will give some more promotion, but you may wait till Aug, as IBM gave this offer last year at Aug as well.

Give it enough time and IBM'll offer a promotion. The best way is to watch their certification news and see... they do tend to do it two or three times a year, though the frequency's been a bit lower more recently. :-\

Me too.
I am also waiting for IBM promotion to clear the ICED exam. Thier exams are too expensive. Totally unaffordable.....

In fact, honestly, if IBM does not give out any promotions or discounts, I wont took these exams, as I really dont think that ICED worths for USD 400.

If I had to pay for USD 400 anyway, I prefer SCEA.

Nick, I got a question about the passing score of ICED 5.0...

For example,

Test 484: Enterprise Connectivity with J2EE V1.3
Test 484 Objectives
Test 484 Sample test
Test 484 Recommended educational resources
Approximate # of questions: 56
Duration in minutes: 90
Format: Multiple Choice
Required Passing Score: 63% on the actual test; 59% on the pre-assessment/sample test

Do we need to pay both for assessment/sample test and for the actual test? The actual test in Thailand is around $60. But I think if I have to take the assessment test, I should pay online, right?

I'm not that sure about the passing system. Does it mean like "I cannot take the actual exam, if I don't pass the assessment test"? Or does it mean like "Even though I pass the actual test, if I didn't pass the assessment test, am I not certified for 484"?

Since you said that IBM won't hold such previous promotion every year, I'm willing to take ICED 5.0 soon...

You dont need to take the ICE test. You can take ICED directly.

Just in case you wanna have some more practices, you can take ICE tests.

So, Nick, what does it mean by this?
Required Passing Score: 63% on the actual test; 59% on the pre-assessment/sample test

The passing score for assessment test is 59%, while that for real test is 63%.

The assessment is not a must.

Hi Nick,
Then do u think that ICED 5.0 is worth to be exchanged with $180, since each exam cost approximately $60 in Thailand?

BTW, how is the ICED 5.0 certification like? I mean the physical appearance of the certificate itself? I feel that my CCNA cert is more attractive than Sun's... Unlike SCJP 1.2, which is made of pretty hard paper, later Sun's certs are just like normal papers... Just curious...

If you mean USD $180, I feel it is ok, as a normal Sun Cert. costs USD $150.

The cert. is in PDF version.
Although you can request for a hardcopy, and even though the hard copy using hard paper, there are NO crops on it. It is as same as what you print out from the PDF.
