Today I passed the IBM-287 examen with 77%! :-) Last week however I failed the test which a score of 60% (norm 62%) . The main reason for that was that I only succeeded till than to study 2/3 of the book of Kushner.(Too much European Championship Soccer on tv ;-) ) The last couple of days I worked through the last third, and now it was ok.

I found the examen nevetheless pretty difficult, surely compared to the examens of Sun, which I all passed which scores of 80% and higher. I think the main reason for this, is that the IBM examen is more detailed. Sometimes so detailed that the answer cannot even been found (later) in the book of Kushner. To overcome this, in my case, I should have refreshed some of my knowledge of the SCBCD, for example the use of Entity beans in combination with the deployment-descriptor. Some things are in the book just discussed on the level of the wizards, while on the exam it is about the xml-tags in the deployment descriptor. Also refreshment of the sequence-diagrams in SCBCD would have been an advantage.

Another major difference with the Sun examen is, that the questions on the IBM examen are more of presenting a problem-situation, and you are asked to solve it in the best way. Of course this needs knowledge of the theory, but that is not enough. You have to interpret the problem situation and think of the best solution. When you are experienced, you have probably an important advantage here. Although I have some experience with JSP/servlet, in regard to all other parts of the exam I am not experienced, even not in the use of WebSphere Studio. I did my servlet-experience with Eclipse.

I will however gain experience when I start my new J2EE job the day after tomorrow. Probably the score will than go up when in the future I will do some update examen! :-)

Regards,

Cor

Congrats.
"1-0 is enough" (Sepp Herberger, 1954).
And I consider 77% an excelent result. The test has really very tricky questions about nasty details.

Work, starting thursday! Than I will be officially transformed from a Oracle Designer Developer into a (IBM) J2EE developer! :-)

In regard to further certification, I will first look in the coming weeks at what will be beneficially for me in the new job. It will probably one of the following:
* IBM 486 (UML) & IBM 484 (Enterprise Connectivity) to complete the IBM Certified Enterprise Developer traject
* SCEA part 2, the assignment
* WebServices IBM or Sun
* IBM Certified System Administrator - WebSphere Application Server V5.0

And further options:
* Linux: LPIC1
* if in any future time there will be certificates for Java Frameworks (f.e. Struts) or Open Source J2EE servers (f.e. Geronimo)
