I just passed this exam last week. This was not exactly an easy exam - lots of questions about semi-obscure stuff in the spec. I read UML 2 Toolkit for preparation but I should've read the OMG spec.

I recommend this cert for anybody using UML extensively.

for anybody using UML extensively.

All right! It's great to hear from someone else who passed the Fundamental exam. Will you be planning on taking the Intermediate-level test also?

Scott, Congratulation on passing the exam!

John could you tell us which books you read to study for the exam. I started reading the UML specs, but its pretty cryptic and hard to understand!

Thanks!

He has mentioned that he used the book: UML 2 Toolkit.

Cheung,

Thanks for *clarifying*. However, I was asking which book John Ewing used to study and pass the test.

Thanks!

Okay experts, I need your advice. I am preparing for the UML fundamental exam. So far I have read UML Distilled. I started reading the specs and found it hard to understand.

I would like to buy another book to study. From the different newsgroups these are most popular books,
UML Bible
UML Toolkit
UML for Dummies

I can afford to buy only one of these. Which one should I buy?

Thanks!

This is not a clarifying message.

John has said that he used *UML 2 Toolkit* to pass the exam as well. The *He* is referring to John. He has taken the exam in Feb 2004, and you may refer to his post at:

Yeah, I used UML 2 Toolkit - it didn't help a lot because I already knew most of that stuff from my everyday work. Reading the spec is a challenge, but I think it is probably the best way to prepare.

No, I don't think I will do the Intermediate one right now. I was in process of doing SCEA and my boss recommended the OMG cert so I need to go back to SCEA and finish up!

As for whether or not I think UML is used extensively....yes, at least at my company it is. I wish it was used more, but we are learning I think documenting architecture and design in a consistent format is a valuable thing. A couple other architects at my company are now looking at this OMG cert.

Nicolas had it right - UML 2 Toolkit was my sole resource.
The spec was a little too painful to read.
