I have noticed a definite performance hit using the new forum. Usually, I have to wait 5-8 seconds after clicking a link to see a list of topics or post. Anyone else having this problem? UBB - The software is written in Perl, and uses flat files to store data. Shouldn't this board use a Java based BB. Perl? Flat files? Okay, for small communities. But JavaRanch is not that small.
Well, there is this small financial issue. JavaRanch has no real source of income, except the dribbles from Amazon if someone is kind enough to use the links from here to buy a book. Most of the COOL BBs written in Java cost bucks. I have to say, it DOES seem slower, however I am hoping that Paul W is working on this.

I've noticed that it is sometimes snappy and sometimes slow. UBB is a pretty good product and is used by many large communities. There is a Java based board called Jive that used to be free but is now rather pricey.

Who needs money? We have enough programmers here...Why don't we build our own. An open source project for JavaRanch. I would contribute to it. We just need someone to project manage/organize it. I've built a simple BB a while back with PHP, it wasn't that hard. Just a thought. [ January 04, 2002: Message edited by: Jim Hall ]

That's how Jive started out. Unfortunately they decided to go commercial. It isn't a bad idea except that coordinating a development effort of that size would be a lot of work.
Hi. Me too was thinking about the open source project thing. But it will be very difficult to build something better than the UBB forum. Why not build a build a mock exam engine which uses XML as input and which can be used as standalone Swing application? And then make a server version as second step. I think this would be way simpler though not too simple. Axel
Jim Hall , Great idea!! I will help! Cindy , "Most of the COOL BBs written in Java cost bucks" Can you name some of them, just want to take a look. click on the link to THE forum take 4 seconds. click on one of the forum take 6 seconds click on a thread takes 7 seconds click on reply take 9 seconds cick on post reply take 10 seconds!! it redirects me back to the thread takes 7 second maybe it is my connection.

Yes but it doesn't have an awful lot in the way of administrative functionality as I recall, also it lacks many feature that we like with this software. Plus if we get it for free it won't have the kind of support we've been getting from infopop lately should something go wrong.
Pounding at a thick stone wall won't move it, sometimes, you need to step back to see the way around.
I'm in the boondocks and running on a 56KB dial-up connection. Yes this board is slow at times, but then so is everything else on the net. Lots of variables affect this (your ISP, ......). There are times when javaranch (new edition) responds quite well I think. And there are times it staggers. That's life. G.
I guess the new forum IS a bit slower than the old one. I hope this happens because of the new features added... As for the open source project I think it's a good idea. Despite my little knowledge I could do something too. You people could post a kind of ad to all forums or something, to see if a project of such kind is viable. And what about JSPs? This is mainly a forum about Java, what the h**l it should be Java-based Tom.

Maybe you are accustomed to such slow responses with your 56K. But everything is not slow on the net with a high-speed connection. I am on my computer 12-14 hrs a day and visit lots of sites, with JavaRanch BB being the slowest. This board makes me feel like I have a 56K at times.
I've thought it was slower too. Sometimes instead of waiting for a page to load itself completely I press stop (Netscape) - this gives me the page with broken links to all the icons' images, but everything's there.
