RUP certification

Hi All,

Has anyone taken the IBM RUP certification test? That is IBM Test 639.
I'm interested in training resources, mock exams and any helpful information that might be available.

The best resource is of course the rational documentation itself. It's searchable and pretty extensive.

Outside of that, I might recommend "The Rational Unified Process Made Easy: A Practitioner's Guide to Rational Unified Process" via Amazon.. Its a pretty practical approach and easier to read than the documentation.

The exam is tough. Mainly because you'll find yourself debating on some of the answers.. Do yourself a favor and try to keep a black and white mindset with it.. There's a lot of room for what-ifs and side tracking.. I don't know if this is because of poor wording or what, but I highly advise studying. If you can come across sample questions, they do a lot to teach you the kind of wording that the test uses..

The new 2005 exam is proctored I think, the old one was entirely online. Not sure how that'll affect the actual test/studying approach..

I have some experiance with RUP, worked with it on a couple of big projects. I also read through Kruchten's "The RUP, An Introduction" so it is not a new subject to me. I'm also trying to avoid the dry Rational documentation so thanks for your recommendation.

When did you take the RUP exam? Could you please give me an estimate of how long did it take for you to study?

I personally find the Rational tests extremly exagerated.
You need to pass 4 (four) tests to become phonky "IBM Certified Specialist for Rational Requirements Management w/Use Cases".

I find this the very opposite to agile.

In addition, you have to currently work in a company that is IBM Rational Partners, otherwise, even you pass all the required exams, you are NOT regarded as certified.

It might be easy to get that status. I have a good friend who is nice person but his strength are not specifically technical. He's a one man company and IBM Business Partner, though not Principal BP.

Why is that requirement? If you are not an employee at that type of company you are locked out of getting this exam? Not so user friendly... :-(

Because IBM does not want too many people to be certified in that area, and only her business partners can earn the certificates, so that the number of cert. holders are limited to increase the value of the certifications.

Then why don't they raise the difficulty level. The result would be the same without that restrictions. Or maybe it's already hard enought. :-)

At the end of the day, the RUP cert isn't a killer, just not something you can overlook. I thought it was more difficult than the SCJP though. Simply because a lot of the answers feel subjective, and again, an 80% requirement vs. the low SCJP passing score. I suppose it all comes down to what you have experience with I guess.

The best book I've found was the practioners guide to rup (via amazon), but I still needed the RUP documentation to get the best study though.

Best advice I can give is to be fully aware of what artifacts come where, when, and by who. The princples themselves are pretty straight forward (iterative cycle, take advantage of the ability to customize rup instead of using everything, its designed to identify risks early, etc.)..

Artifacts and roles both require a small amount of memorization, but other than that.. It'll come down to reading a book or two and using RUP on a couple of projects to get the idea of it all.

It is better to read the overall page of the certification before reading the details of particular exams.

Thanks Nick. Next question. Do you or anyone know of a vendor neutral respected and recognized certification for Business Analyst, RUP, UML?

I don't work for a company right now and wanted to get certification to increase my marketability. Do you or anyone have any suggestions for me?
