I would like any and all problems about the upgrade to be posted in this forum.
We'll use this place as the center to talk about these issues.

You mean aside from the server being down for a couple of hours?

Frank Carver is broken.
I was walking down the side of the Saloon Main Page, click on each Moderators name, which shows their profile, and adding them to my "buddy list". I got everybody loaded - except Frank.
Seems that he has a picture showing there that is mucking things up . The "Add to Buddy list" option is not available for him.

I replied to your original post, Cindy. I've taken the picture off, so could you please re-check to see if I am still "broken" ?

Hmmm, Frank doesn't have a pic in his profile.
Can you give me an idea on how I might be able to experience the problem? (you must be using something I haven't tried yet)

Nope - you are still broken.
At the bottom of your profile where it says
"Note: Member ratings are not currently permitted on this message board. " across from it should have the "Block" and "Add" Buddy list options. I don't see that on your profile.
But ONLY yours.

It's very odd. I have the same problem that I can't make Frank my buddy.
Strangely, if I click on me, the option to add me to my buddy list is there (although it doesn't actually let me add myself). But for Frank this option isn't even there. Is there an option that Frank turned off somewhere?
Wait... I'll bet Frank has turned off the option to allow people to send him private messages!!! Since a buddy list is only meaningful in relation to private messages it would make sense to not allow Frank to be our buddy if he isn't accepting private messages.

Ah! that'll be it. I can put the picture back, then.
I turned off the "private messages" option as a knee-jerk reaction to the stream of questions I already get by email which should better be asked in the forums. Maybe I could turn private messages back on and see how it goes.

I just delete e-mails that ask questions. I don't even do a "please post it in the forums".

"I think, therefore I am ..."
"I think not, therefore ... " ???
When Kathy ran the original JavaRanch, she called herself "the cowgirl". When she handed it over to me, I emphatically insisted that I did not want to be "the cowgirl". So Kathy said that she would be the cowgirl for life and I would be the trailboss.
I suppose it's possible that I could die and then Jim, Carl or Ajith could take the title. I suppose it's also possible that somebody could give me a bazillion dollars just so they could be the trailboss.
In looking into my crystal ball (more like a marble), I see me being the trailboss for a long time.

I still cannot post a new topic, although I have no problem posting replies, managing the control panel, or any other thing I've tried around here since the upgrade. Obviously other people can start new topics. I wonder what the difference is

Hi everybody,
Paul asked me to come take a look at the problems you guys are having since we performed the upgrade last week.
Let's keep this thread going - I want to hear every problem you're encountering. Also, when you have a problem doing something, can you please tell me how far into the process you get and what the result is. For instance, for those of you trying to post a new topic, are you receiving an error message or just a white page, and if so, at what point in the process?
If you notice that someone has already posted a problem you're encountering, just reference the post and note that you're having the same problem, so that we can avoid confusion.
Let's start here - Marilyn, when you try to post a new topic - what happens?
I look forward to working with you all on this, and appreciate any feedback you can give us.

Scratch that. Marilyn - is this what you're getting?

FYI
Sorry, UBB has encountered an unexpected, fatal error. This error is extremely abnormal. Please contact the board administration. The error text is:
Can't open /home/vhost1/www.javaranch.com/vroot/ubb/test.file: Permission denied
Here is the backtrace:
Backtrace: ubb_lib_filehandle.cgi:294 -> sub UBB::FileHandle::tracer
Backtrace: ubb_lib_filehandle.cgi:382 -> sub UBB::FileHandle::_open
Backtrace: ubb_lib_filehandle.cgi:58 -> sub UBB::FileHandle::_open_file
Backtrace: ubb_lib_filehandler.cgi:116 -> sub UBB::FileHandle::new
Backtrace: ubb_lib_files.cgi:519 -> sub UBB::FileHandler: pen
Backtrace: ubb_new_topic.cgi:414 -> sub main::WriteFileAsString
Backtrace: ultimatebb.cgi:603 -> sub main::submit_new_topic
 Please use your browser's back button to return.

I know Paul has gotten this before. Can I have a quick show of hands from others who have seen this error when posting?

Kate, feel free to give yourself access to the MO forum with your other account.
I've been encouraging folks to start a new thread in this forum for each problem. Marilyn posted this problem in this thread because, well, she couldn't post!

I wrote Paul an e-mail about having this error. At the time I thought that it related to posting a raw link in the body, but when I couldn't even post a new thread to complain about not being able to post the raw link - I realized that it was more like a "starting a new topic" issue.
This went on for about an hour - under 2 different IDs, when SUDDENLY I could start a new topic with no problem - go figure. At no time was there a problem responding to an existing topic.

Well I still can not start a topic. Just tried today in MO and got the above (NOT very unusual) fatal error.
Sort of takes the fun out of forums. . . . Could explain the lack of discussion in MO :roll:

OK a Third problem
1 - fatal errors creating new topic
2 - formatting errors and messups
3 - date displays on main page when backing up
I create a new window of IE, my main page is JavaRanch. It shows up fine, with date displays fine.
I go into a forum - say the JavaRanch forum. Then I back out for whatever reason (like say - I can't post a new topic anyway. . . ). The date and topic displays are not the ones that were just there. They seem to be a cached version of the main page from yesterday. I could recreate this 6 times in a variety of scenarios - all involving backing up. If you want I have a pretty picture saved of the main page showing yesterdays dates that I got served today :roll: .
Confused me for a bit until I figured out what was going on.
In the old release we NEVER had caching problems with the main page. It would update the counts and times, even when we had problems getting the topics to refresh.

How about if we concentrate on getting the problem with posting new subjects resolved first and then we can start new threads with all the other problems we're seeing. I have a few of my own to post. Otherwise everything will turn into a big jumbled up mess in this thread. :roll:

By the way, I've tried with a couple of different ID's as well just to rule out any interference from the "sheriff" title. I also tried to post a new topic here as an unregistered user with the same result.

I can't post anything new either ....
The 'permission denied' message ....
I would start by taking a look at the permission bits, owner, and group at -every- subdirectory level.
I'd also ask some high level questions like:
Was the unix OS on the server recently upgraded?
Was Perl recently upgraded?
Were any Perl packages recently upgraded?
Who else is running this level of UBB, and are they having problems?
I have seen some very strange display problems, but certainly low priority compared to no new posts.
G.

Can we have an update from our friends at infopop so we know how things are progressing?
