Hi,
I just wanted to know are there some other certifications, other than the ones offered by sun.
i am a java/j2ee web developer and would like to get certified.
i plan to do SCJP but was wondering if there are other options available.

Thanks
mohit

You might, by the by, change your username to meet the naming policy here at the ranch.

But, on the topic of your question - there are a few minor ones (such as Brainbench), but I don't think there are any that have the familiarity in the market place to compete with the SCJP. Sun's program is the most recognizable when it comes to Java.

hi Theodore

suggestion accepted and implemented

about the certification, as i said i am planning to take SCJP but after that or side by side thinking to take up some certification more closely linked to web development using J2EE.

but taking SCJP first will be better as you have said.

thanks

Well, if you're looking for something more web-development-centric, then after the SCJP, you can take the SCWCD (Web Component Developer) which concentrates on servlets and JSPs. It requires the SCJP as a prerequisite.

i discovered ibm 150 and 154. one of them is a newer one. they are j2ee exams. in addition, there are some other ibm exams which are pure java technology; that is, no vendor-dependent topics on the exam.

browse through ibm's site. you can start here http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/tests/obj154.shtml

Took a look at the two exams... they seem to be (and this might just be the impression I got from looking at them through role-based views rather than exam-specific) in the same boat as IBM's 486 - that is to say, they're not, themselves, certifications but exams that contribute towards one of IBM's certifications.

It's not to say that they're not worthwhile, which I would have no idea on since I've not taken them. But my gut instinct is that they are not stand-alone certifications, if one's pursuing certifications in specific, rather than exams to show knowledge of a topic as a goal.
