IBM 634

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi folks,

Now that I've passed 633, I'm trying to put together a study plan for 634. However, there isn't much information out there to go by. IBM list the following as exam objectives:

Classes
Object-oriented principles
Relationships
The Rational Unified Process
Concurrency
Distribution

There is no detail to go with this list, and even the courses they suggest don't seem to cover all these points.

So far, I've ordered a book on RUP (Kroll & Kruchten), and plan to study those chapters of Larman pertaining to GRASP and GoF.

But, what do "concurrency" and "distribution" mean in the context of this exam? These terms don't appear in the Larman index, and I don't think they're RUP terms. Are they referring to concurrent state machines and deployment diagrams?

If anyone who has written 634 could provide some guidance, I'd really appreciate it!

Hi,

this is basically not a response to your question, i am preparing for my 633 now.could you tell me the books you refered to. i am currently refering to UML patterns-craig larman(not sure which edition to refer to..help), uml distilled(edition?)-martin fowler.

anything else you think i should concentrate on, or any other books suggested.

thanks in advance.

Hi Madhuri,

Those are the two books I used. There is another thread here entitled "IBM 633" where I went into greater detail about how I prepared. If that's still not enough information, please let me know.

Hi Scott,

Greatly appreciate your response. Did you use the third edition for both the books? Good luck with your exam.

I did use the latest versions of the books. Keep in mind, though, that the exam is based on UML 1.x. Fortunately, Fowler provides an index covering the older version.

Hi Scott

The concepts of 'cocurrency' and 'distribution' are well described in the IBM course DEV475: Mastering Object Oriented Analysis and Design with UML. I appeared for Test 633 as well and few of the questions asked were directly from this course's study material. Most of the questions were directly from "The Unified Modeling Language User Guide
by Grady Booch, James Rumbaugh, Ivar Jacobson".
I would suggest you to arrange for the above mentioned course material and go through it before appearing for the exam.

Achint

Hi Achint,

Thanks for the input; I really appreciate it.

Just to clarify, though, are you saying that the course and book you mention are for 633 or 634? The reason I'm unclear is that you refer to 633, but the thread is entitled 634.

Thanks again.

Hi Scott

The course material mainly covers 634 and a part of UML (633).

Hi Friends,
I have also recently taken 633 and have cleared it. Am also starting with preps for 634 now, which seems a genuine extension to the 633.
The books all of you suggested, I think, would be helpful.
In total, it comes out that :
1) DEV475 resource
2) Applying UML & Patterns (Craig Larman )
3) UML User Guide by 3 amigos

are the most required resources for this paper.
Thanks for info,
-prem

Thanks for the good summary, PremPratap.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get the DEV475 material without taking the course? I've scoured IBM's website to no avail.

Hi Achint,
Have you already cleared the exam 634. I just started going thru the details, the exam objectives, Scott printed them up here as well, and the course Dev475 do not seem to be in sync. The course seems to be talking a lot about S/w Engg, Architectural Analysis & Run Time Architecture, Requirements Overview, Design Elements, SUbSystem, DB Design, etc.
Do you think all these are also part of this exam.
Also, have you used any of the mock tests offered by the n number of websites. Just wanted to know, so if possible, I would like to try atleast one.
If anyone has any experience with these sample/mock papers sold online, pls share.
thanks,

Hi Prem

I haven't appeared for 634 till now. I am also about to start preparing for the same. Yes, the course contents seem to be out of sync but when you look into the contents deeply, you'll find that topics indirectly map to the contents of the course.

What you 'll be tested for in 634 is the application of OOAD concepts using Rational unified process (covering classes, relationships, cocurrency, distribution). Thats what is covered by the course 475. All the exam objectives are covered in the course material.
I had clarified these doubts from the IBM trainer when I took the 5 day course DEV475 since he himself had cleared all the 3 tests. He even told me that I need not study any other book except the course material and UML User Guide for all the 3 tests.

Hi Scott,

When are you planning to appear for 634?

Hi Achint,

As soon as I feel ready.

Preferably before the end of the year, though.
