Hello,
I'm planning to study and pass the UML OOAD 486 in two months. However, I've heard that UML 486 will probably be given up at the end of 2006. Does it mean that the value of this certification will be nil at that time? Is it worth taking it or should I wait for the next one to come out?

By the way, I am not planning to pass the Websphere related exams, only the UML. Are there any other UML exams in the market that aren't going to disappear anytime soon?

Many thanks,
Jeq

Hi Jim,

There have been a couple of threads here about this very thing. For me, I felt I had two options to consider:

- The OMG's OCUP certification (http://www.omg.org/uml-certification/) is focussed just on UML syntax, and has a few different levels of achievement.
- IBM's Certified Specialist for Rational Object Oriented Analysis and Design (http://www-03.ibm.com/certify/certs/rlrcoad3.shtml). This is comprised of tests 633, 634, and 635, and you get a certification after passing all three tests.

I chose the second approach, as I wanted more than just rote memorisation of syntax. However, I'm finding information about how to prepare for these exams hard to come by. I passed 633 last week (see my post on that in another thread), and am now starting to prepare for 634. (From what I can tell, 633 is UML itself, 634 is applying analysis/design techniques using UML, and 635 is Rational Rose, though I might be wrong about this.)

Note that the IBM path uses UML 1.x, as opposed to 2.0, and uses Rational Rose, which has been replaced by newer products. While OCUP uses UML 2.0, the only prep material I've seen is the UML spec itself (not exactly captivating reading). Also, keep in mind that writing 486 by itself will not entitle you to any certification, certificate, etc.

Hope this helps!

I seriously suspect that if IBM discontinues 486, as they did with 141 earlier this summer, they'll replace it with another exam that covers the same ground but is updated for the latest standard. (141 was replaced with 142, replacing the XML 1.0 technologies with XML 1.1.) They might well move it under the banner of the Rational division, but I suspect that it will still remain as a part of their program, due to the roles they have laid out in their testing program.

I sent an email to IBM asking about 486 test and they replied:

Thank you for contacting the IBM Professional Certification Program. The certification for Test #486 will be withdrawn 12-31-2006. Visit the link and see notes listed below.

So, yes, they will withdraw it and I just started studying for it

I'm not so sure they will replace it with a vendor independent test as 486, they are more likely to create a Rational-related test, I'm afraid.

I wonder if I can make it to take the test before the end of the year and anyway I'm not sure it makes sense to rush for a test that is about to disappear (the contents of the exam are valuable, though...)

Hope it helps,
Claudio

That link doesn't say the 486 will be discontinued. The link says that a particular certification that included 486 as a requirement is being discontinued. There might still be hope.

If IBM drops exam 486, they will lose much of the respect I have for them. The 486 was one of their few remaining great exams not permeated with marketing filth.

I'm afraid you didn't read my last post. I sent an email to IBM and they replied:

So it'n not a matter of interpretation or hope. 486 will be canceled, withdrawn, closed, dismissed at the end of the year and yes, it's a shame since there will not be an updated tes based on vendor-independent contents like 486 any more in IBM catalogue

486 and 484 are the by-products of JCert certification. As JCert is not existed, there is no reason to maintain such certification tests.

I noticed that many 'advanced' IBM certifications on WSAD and WebSphere needed 486. Now, the Solutions Developer and Application Developer certifications do not need the UML cert.

I was actually thinking about doing an ExamScam title on it - there aren't many great UML books out there. But the lack of interest from IBM has turned into a lack of interest to me.

Looks like test 486 is going to go the way of the, er, Intel 486.

Hi Kameron,

Do you have any interest on 000-257 certification guide ?

The 486 is much more than just UML, a good portion of the exam covers the Unified Process.
