Hi all,
Just wondering how valuable the xml certification is? THere are so many certs arounds, Oracle Dev & ADm, Java Dev & Arc., etc., I just get lost in which one I should spend my time on at the current frustrating job market.
Thanks a lot
Chris

Here are my thoughts...
XML is an evolving technology and every day thousands of developers become 'XML aware' by learning the new things. If you want to compete with them for a potential job, a certification might help you get an edge over the others. When recruiters don't have a measuring stick to assess the competence of the candidates an approved credential such as a certification most certainly screams for their attention to your resume.
Having said that, just like any other certification, this too cannot guarantee anything all by itself. It can only supplement other skills and experience that you may have.
As of today IBM is the only organization that is administering the XML certification. The exam is still in its first version and IMHO needs quite a lot of overhauling in terms of what is covered. Also note in addition to getting certified, you will still have to learn about using XML in your Java apps and about leveraging technologies like SOAP, XMLRPC, WebServices etc.
Cheers,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. As for Cert, I think some are very useful. As Java Cert for Programmer, I knew it worth to get it even without considering put it in resume. THere are so many java jobs around and this Cert is actually reinforcing some basic surviving knowledge if anyone wants to use java in a job.
For oracle, DBA MIGHT still be hot even now because there are so many companies are using Oracle.
However, for xml, it is so old considering its origin but so new in its application. I am a little confused with which skills the industry is really looking for in this markup language?

hey cris,

Taking java or oracle dba or XML doesn't mean that or doesn't guarante u a job, it's just testing ur knowledge ,how strong are u in concept. that's all,

so iam not the saying don't take it, it's depend upon u, when i started looking out for job, i found Java , then i took Java programming cert,i got a project(b'cos iam cerified) after that project , i came out again looking for job, i found XML is picking up,so i decided to take XML Exam i did it, i took it 4 months before, but u know what iam not working in XML now, iam in java,c,c++ TeleCom, and ofcource i got a job in XML in HP
for a 4 months contract ,i din't take the job, so certification has some value, it's all depend on how serious u r, that's all

Just give a try......
All the best.
