I would like to know how much Time is needed to prepare for this exam, preparing full time.
Also, could you pls suggest the one book that will do it. I have seen several mentioned in the links page but with a zillion things to read and no job, i cannot afford the time and money for so many books
trying to figure out if I should go for the architect or xml cert

Professional XML is one of the three books listed by IBM, and is the most important one. You should definately have that one, and preferably the other two. XML-related specifications are also listed by IBM, and can be downloaded or printed online. There a various online tutorials.
I would say it would take about 3 weeks to prepare for the XML 141 exam, working full-time. However, the time depends on a lot of variables.

I appreciate that I am considered the expert!?
Anyone with a decent software background can learn XML. I would say that XML is easier to learn and get certified in from scratch than Java.
It is somewhat similar to HTML, so HTML background helps. It helps to know Cascading Style Sheets. Web development background helps. However, XML is used as a data transfer format apart from web uses.
Background with parsing and string manipulation languages such as Perl helps.
A lot of XML jobs require Java, but there is no similarity between the languages of Java and XML.
