If your goal is to get certified, then you don't have to read all the 1000 pages( phew! ). I'd say just stick to the published objectives on IBM website and use your book as a study guide. Don't forget to read XML specs. No book is as good as the spec itself. If the document on w3c.org is too esoteric for you, try reading the best annotated xml spec published ever. I have fallen in love with this document. DOM spec all the way till level 3 is somewhat important too.
