Failed Again

Failed the 141 for the second time today. I have a real problem understanding what the questions mean. Is there ANYTHING i can do to prepare properly? i read the professional xml 2, did the online test, went through some IBM teaching material, read online stuff. I thought i'd get it for sure. when i was doing the test i didn't understand the questions.

I am sorry to hear that. But don't be upset,
Prepare well when you take the exam next time.
BTW, could you tell me about some of your experience? As I am going for that exam at the end of this month.

I've read pretty much everything i could find. (even actual IBM teaching material). i just don't understand what IBM is talking about in their questions. I wish they would just get to the point. Plus my course was designed with a smaller xml part because at the time, exam 140 was the one to write. we had 3 weeks of xml, then certification. I guess my best advice at this time would be study a LOT and do a lot of practical XML work too!

Hi Scott,
One more question about that exam.
In the objective of the exam 141, it mentions the
SAX and DOM API, does that mean the api of java?

If you are looking for anything to prepare, I would suggest XMLWhiz and the other books IBM recommends.

Hi Scott,
Don't be disheartened man. The best approach in my opinion would be to analyze your weaness and work on that.
Regarding resources - as you also must be aware, there is not even a single book written for this particular exam. Thus you should not rely on just a single book like professional xml, combination of books will be of good help besides many good tutorials on sites like http://www.xml.com, http://www.topxml.com
Also as recommended by joseph, XMLWhiz from http://www.whizlabs.com should be of great help.
All the best

Hi, Scott!!!
Do not worry, please. The only thing you need is just a little practise.
I have been reading posts from people here for several months and I found that most of people who didn't pass their exams are people who hadn't used any good test engines (test simulators).
I stronly recommend you to buy a good one.
As I know, Whizlabs has one for 141(www.whizlabs.com) and Boson (www.boson.com) has one, but for 140. Maybe they will upgrade it soon.
Take some practise exams and you will pass for sure next time.
Regards,
Mariusz

Hi scott,
Dont get upset.. Try again. I am planning to take the test may be the end of this month.
I am a little bit concerned about the length of the questions.. Because when given a long exhibit and asked to select the best technology to solve the problem, I am getting confused..
Any way. good luck
Steff

Hi Scott:
I pass IBM 141 with 65%. So that is close. I think one way to learn all these XML stuff is hands-on practice. It did make difference, especially if you do not have much XML experience.
It may be diffcult to accept the fact that to prepare for an exam, you have to waste valuable time to play around. That was why I did not do any hands on practice. And it turn out to take even longer and only barely pass.
Now when I think back, I feel it might be easier if I had some hands on practice.
Good luck with your next try!

Scott,
Sorry to hear about the failure. I would suggest reading more and writing more too. When learning about schemas/xslt, it helps a lot if you try it out. You could download a good xml editor like xmlspy, evaluation version for 30 days and try with it. It helps a lot while trying out some xpath expressions using xmlspy and transforming to see the result immediately. Helps a lot to correct the mistakes and understand the basics.
Don't lose hope, try, try try again.
Good luck next time,
Hema

I've made multiple unsuccessful attempts myself. I've taken 15 Prometric exams and 10 Brainbench exams, and I've passed them all, so I'm fairly experienced with certification test taking. I've been taken aback by the trouble I've had with this test.
The IBM XML exam is just a tough test. It covers a lot of material, and most of the questions require close examination. It should be a two-hour test instead of a 90-minute test. The answers to many of the questions tend to revolve around syntax details that most programmers will get from reference materials when they're working on an XML project.
If you're looking for another book to study, I'd recommend Professional XML Schemas from Wrox. This book is on IBM's study list. Some sections of the book nearly perfectly mirror test questions with which I had trouble.
