JAXP : Its an abstract api for parsing the XML in vendor independent way. For eg :Apache xerces, IBM XML4j, provides their own way of parsing the XML. One shouldn't glue their code to any of these apis, since it will be difficult to switch over, so sun provides an abstract way of parsing in form of JAXP.(Always your code should be specific to JAXP).
DOM: DOM is a tree based XML parsing, The parser will load the whole XML and parse. Its memory intensive.
SAX: Its an event based parsing, whenevr ever a element/attribute or some other "entity" is encountered the parse is notified by an event.not memory intensive
