From IBM 141 ICE exam:
14)Processing instructions can be used for all of the following EXCEPT: (SELECT 2)
a) a method for passing the name of a stylesheet.
b) a method of extending documents without altering DTD validation.

c) a mechanism for extending schemas that cannot otherwise be modified.

d) a mechanism for indicating hierarchical levels of structure.

e) a hook for scripts or server-side includes.
Both a) and e) are True so they cannot be the answers. d) is False since that is indicated by DTD or Schema. So d) is one of the answers. Now between b) and c), I am not sure which one is wrong ? (so it will be the other answer)
I'd think it should be c) since I think this should NOT be the sole mechanism to extend schema. Am I correct?
Thanks,

BTW, I found that this question is in the retired XML exam.

But that one seems to ask for only one answer, not two.

The answer given there is the only correct choice. They gave meaningful explanation there to support that.

Attention: your question is different than the one on http://viktor99.virtualave.net/IBM141a.html
Look at the new sample test answers, two answers are correct for your question.

My interpretation is the questions is "what are the scenarios for which the processing instruction CANNOT be used" due to the keyword EXCEPT at the end of the question.
The only difference in the question is the following statement -
New test given by Svetlana -
a) a method for passing the name of a stylesheet.

Old test given by Victor -
a) a method for passing document presentation information.

I think both the options essentially mean the same thing. Please correct me if not.
Anyway i'm not very clear about the intent of the guy who framed the question? (what he was looking for)

I'm not sure what has caused the confusion. Apart from all technical arguments. The old 141 was a radio-button single selection question. The current is a multiple selection (2 correct answers) one. I am copying the current one right here again. My question was simply put: if (d) is one of the answers, which one is the other?
If it had only one correct answer, I'd pick (d) without thinking about other options.

13)
Processing instructions can be used for all of the following EXCEPT:

a) a method for passing the name of a stylesheet.

b) a method of extending documents without altering DTD validation.

c) a mechanism for extending schemas that cannot otherwise be modified.

d) a mechanism for indicating hierarchical levels of structure.

e) a hook for scripts or server-side includes.

Multiple Select - Please select all of the correct answers (this question has 2 correct choices).
