The Infoset is the abstract data model of the information in a well-formed XML document. <a>xxx</a> is just one possible concrete serialization format of an abstract object defined by the Infoset. Other serializations will emerge in the future (with better performance than the current XML1.0). The Infoset raises the level of abstraction by describing the result of parsing a well-formed XML document, in a serialization-independent way. If a parser supports a serialization different from XML1.0, but is Infoset compliant, then I can use the parser without changing my current applications. For those reasons, the Infoset is important for people who create new XML related specs (like SOAP) and XML APIs.
