Does anyone know if a variable can be used in a Schematron assert? if yes, please show how.

Sorry, no clue what a schematron assert is...
Haven't encountered this term in my limited exposure to xml....

Schematron is a Schema validation language. And an assert is of type -
<assert test="condition">Message to show if test fails</assert>
My question was if I can use a variable in the condition part.
