Just finished reading chapter 6 ("SAX") of Harold's Processing XML with Java. It was an easy read. But I'm wondering how carefully I should
read chapters 7 and 8 (respectively, "XMLReader Interface" and "SAX Filters"). I mean, this is an exam on XML not on SAX... should I learn
SAX filters inside and out and learn every single variation on using XMLReader?

I wouldn't worry about memorizing that kind of details. At least the SAX questions in my exam were on a higher level than the "variations" you're talking about.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
