Monson-Haefel Use this term in his book in Overview
"In a nutshell, J2EE Web Services is about interoperability....."
What does it mean "interoperability" ?
Dictionary says : ability of a system (as a weapons system) to use the parts or equipment of another system

Interoperability is about the ability of one software to cooperate with another software written independently of the other. In practice, this means that there is some common ground that the two parties agree on -- what kind of messages the two systems promise to send and to receive.
The traffic system works because everyone (well, most anyway) follows the same rules. The cars get fuel because every gas station uses the same kind of pumps. If the gas station you finally found was using a square-shaped pump, which doesn't fit into your gas tank, you'd have an interoperability problem.

Nice explanation, Lasse.
I'll just throw in the following:
Interoperability is the ability of different computer programs to exchange data using a commonly understood format and protocol.
