What are the demilitarized zones (DMZs)

The primary use of the term "demilitarized zone" in the software community I believe is a part of the LAN that is "outside" the firewall and gateway for an internal LAN, but may be "inside" the public firewall and gateway to the LAN. It's intended as an area that does limited communications, but holds the "public face" of the LAN. It's also considered "expendable", in that it can be compromised without losing vital information.
