This question was asked at CSS last October and was asked only
of those that were an integral part of the hiring process.
How much weight does the hiring manager put into
the J2 Certification?
The overwhelming response was - NONE!
I pose the same question here, is it all hype only to inflate
the bottom line at Sun or is it really worth it to go through
all steps to Java Certification Happiness?

- flames greatly appreciated and promptly ignored.....

Although I am a programmer by trade (currently an architect), I was the HR directory of my company during the early months (it was a start-up), and still do a lot of interviewing.
I have posted many emails to the Jobs Forum on this topic. General people there ask about SCJP and SCJD. The short answer is, I much prefer experience, or even a Cs degree over Sun's certification, which I find to be only slightly better than useless. (Given two otherwise equal candidates, with no experience, I suppose I'd take the certified one.)
http://www.javaranch.com/ubb/Forum26/HTML/000139.html has the same question asked for SCJA. My response can be found there.
In general, I repeatedly tell people that practical experience is better than certification. I encourage people to work on independent projects they can demo to prospective employeers, rather than work on ceritifcation.
