Well, I'll take a shot at part of this. I thought this was a rather vague objective.
Encapsulation helps improve flexibility & extensibility because you hide the details of how things are done behind an interface. As long as you don't change the interface you don't break anything. Inheritance is a mechanism for implementing polymorphism. So if you design your interfaces correctly and use inheritance you can add classes to your system and everything will continue to work. You can even add new behavior to your system in this fashion.
