Fellows,
I cleared part I today. Joined this forum yesterday for the 1st time (That is very very true.). I wished I had joined a bit early. This forum really helped me assess my strengths and wk.nesses. Worked till 11:30 yesterday and covered quite a few missing points.
As far as my experience goes... Exam is not exactly a piece of cake if you are not well prepared (I was not). I started working on it on May 7th. Had a training for a wk. on iPlanet for 1 wk., which was a bit distracting. Wanted to work on wk. ends but could not do it extensively. 1st wk. spent studing EJB specs 2.0 and then realised we have to work on 1.1. Around 5 days of EJB specs reading, 2 days for JMS specs, 0.75 day for I18N. 1.5 days for security, 1 day for different potocols. God knows how many days for legacy systems. DONT MISS REVISIONS REVISIONS REVISIONS. That was time spent basically. Not a hell lot on JSP/Swing/Servlets etc. When taking this exam, I suppose if you read case studies for legacy systems, it would help.(I did not do it but It would have paid a great deal). EJB Specs is cool resource. Ed Roman helped as far as 2 phase commit acid props. are concerned (Not helpful as far as exam is concerned but concepts take center stage).
Be sure you know the definations and applicability of terms published on suned site... Reliability etc. there were questions on applicability of these things. UML is piece of cake... but be prepared not to panic last minuit. Prepare on all aspects, class diagram is just a part of it, dont just concentrate on it. Take deep breath if you need at the last moment. (I did not and was bit confused). 6/7 (That is more than 12%) questions regarding IIOP, CORBA. Prepare it well. Know quite well things like MQSerise etc. What it is where it is used etc. Know about screen scraping, firewall. Scalability... There were questions about clustering apps server, web server and it's effect on reliability etc. Know how clustering works. try to get good grasp on 1,2,N tier architecture in real world. Quite a few questions revolve around that... like applet at client end, Legacy system at back end, web server between them and firewall in front of web server etc. Don't be afraid to use common sense and general knowledge if you have to. It helps. Make most sensible choice... but BE VERY WELL PREPARED, and it will help you take an educated guess. Few questions are very very st. forward. crack them ASAP and you can buy some more time. Prepare design patterns, know it's applicability in terms of EJBs etc. If two design patterns are similar with subtle differences, know the differences and their applications, it helps a lot in this certification. Securiety questions can buy you some time if you know about it... According to me (take it with a pinch of salt, this is my own experience and other ppl may have different experience), you don't have to cover security in depth... Conceptual knowledge is needed. Before going for exam if you feel you are not prepared for certain topics, dont panic... Keep your deadline and work hard for the goal.
Just because vouched is valid for 1 year, don't wait for 365.24th day. Set date, set deadline, work hard, be smart, go for the test, bring it home and the PARTY HARD Friday night. If you decide agressive deadline and adhare to it, you will feel great.
My experience about this test... It helped me a lot as far as structured preparation is concerned. deadline always rocks, if you can get some one to make you work hard towards your goal it will help. You may be more than prepared for the exam, while you still think "I need more time".
Remember Nike... JUST DO IT!

Congratulations and thankyou very much for the tips.
Even I would like to know about the legacy system case studies you talked about.
You also mentioned about Corba and IIOP . How deep you need to study CORBA. Please reply.

Congrats and welcome to the club.
By the way what was your pass percentage. Take rest and then we have to work again for Part - II and III.
I would like to request you not to post any part of actual questions in the ensuing discussion. Please edit your post if you find that you have posted actual parts of questions in your earlier post.
Thanks.

I did not study CORBA a lot... but that was my mistake. Anyone appearing for this test should have good conceptual knowledge of the same to feel comfortable in the test.
As far as legacy systems are concerned you should study multi tier applications and how Java fits in the existing systems... in middle tier, in 1st tier etc. It should be a study of existing system, security systems in effect and migrating everything for easy access on internet intranet etc. Consider everything as the part of the BIG picture rather than considering it in pieces.
I suppose I've not mentioned any specific questions in my previous mail but if you feel like I've done so pl. let me know I'll edit ASAP.
I may not be able to get back to you guys over next wk.
