I wander if there is any free EJB webs-space out there; failing that, Is there an alternative to using EJB to create something that is close to the Pet-Shop example. I will be using mycgiserver.com the only relevant services are servlets and a relational database.

Hi -
There are lots of options. First off, download the Reference Implementation from Sun. It allows deployment of EJBs and access of them - it's designed to work as a "proof of concept" - so it's light-weight, but should be fine for what you're trying. Install is easy...just get the batch scripts right and you're set to go.
Other than that, check out Enhydra open source application server and/or jBoss. Also, look at www.sourceforge.org - they often have links into open source Java servers that will do what you need.
Also, all the vendors will give you at least 30 days to eval their products for that experience.
Hope this helps,
Chana

Oops, forgot the database question.
I believe that Sun's RI uses a one-person version of Cloudscape as its database. BEA uses it as well for their eval versions. But what the heck, as long as you've got a JDBC driver or even the ODBC-JDBC bridge....do it in Access! It doesn't have to be enterprise heavy for a good learning experience..!<G>
Cheers,
Chana
